My wife wants a new head unit in the magna, something to do mp3's and fancy stuff.
she has found a Sony CDX-GT270 head unit for $156 bucks at stupid cheap.
http://www.sony.com.au/xplod/catalog/product.jsp?categoryId=22000
whats involved in a stereo install for these things, can ya buy a plug in adaptor for em? or a plug into the magna wiring loom and wire into the stereo?
Is this sony head unit worth money?
recon its worth paying somebody to do it, or is it a simple in and out job, how does the one in their come out, got a security bolt on the back of it like the old commodores?
will i loose the things like turn power on and aerial comes up?
will it effect warrantee?
cheers
Nathan
You can buy adaptors to go from the original loom to the sony loom, they are a 2 piece unit the 1st part which is from the magna plug to a set of generic plugs is around 15-20 bucks and the 2nd part is from the generic plugs to the sony plug, retail on those is 15.95.
The Gt270 is an ok headunit it can play WMA/Mp3's and has an aux in etc however only drawback is it only has one preout but if your not looking at connecting amps etc to the unit it will be fine. Sony decks are pretty resonable now ive only had one come back in the several hundred we have sold since the 08 product release.
It has an electrical antenna wire on sony's loom so it will still go up and down like the OEM unit. There a good price at 156 but hunt around because the market is very competitive atm in terms of CD players.
There not hard to change yourself once you have the loom adaptors i know with my TH it was a 20 min job but to get it installed is usually 40-50 bucks depending on where you go or if you buy the cd player from them.

to be honest mate i wouldnt touch the sony stuff
but thats me
i would go down to jb and have alook at some JVC decks
as for the antennar, if the decks wired up correctly then you should lose it
when i got my new deck installed the antennar only comes up when im listening to the radio

yes thats it. Bare in mind thats a plug to bare ends adaptor so it will involve matching the colours up to the sony one and soldering

yeah piese of piss, i might do the loom all up for them, and next service say stick this in, that way it wont effect new car warrantee, or the sony warrantee.
yep, and the few sony warrantys ive done they have never asked me whether it was installed properly hehe, however kenwood does

Yes. The cheapest place for them is actually Super Cheap. The best option is to get the Magna to ISO and an ISO to Sony (check the model). They are about $16 each.
You simply unplug the loom from the exisiting HU, plug in the Magna to ISO, then plug the ISO to Sony. If you're lucky you may find a Magna to Sony.
Autobarn also does them.
Where are you - I'm happy to assist (on the Gold Coast).
If you're gunna give it a go yourself, check out - http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32761

i went to supercheap, and they are trying to source me a magna to sony plug, directly plug in?
That'll work - provided it's the correct Sony model. This removes the need to buy 2 adapters - the Magna loom end (to ISO) and the Sony plug end (to ISO).
Having it all in one also increases the chances of not needing to do anything to it for quirks like auto ant, etc.

well saves me having to do some soldering.
thats if htey can source some for me, they had a few that were to sony, but didnt mention which car they were from... seemed to have 2 female plugs going into 1 male plug (which id assume is sony)
yeah the 2 female plugs are generic iso plugs, the ones we sell at work which are the generic iso's to the sony plug will work with the 08 range up until the AV deck range from memory. They can also source a magna plug to bare wires, ill look up the part no and price for you 2morro when i can be bothered going to work :bowrofl:
Don't know if you've bought it yet, but its $128 for the same deck at Strathfield.

As for the harness, autobarn sell them, $15 each. You need 2, one to go from the magna loom to a 4 pin and a 8 pin plug, and one to go from the 4+8pin plugs to the sony harness. This is exactly how our TR is wired up.

Putting a sony CDXA20 HU in my TE should be the same.
should be able to buy the 2 connecty bits from stupidcheap auto
1. take out console tray(part where gear stick is) held in by clips
2.pull out lower part of center console and un unsrew 2 screws holding middle part in.
3.Take out top part of console (irritating to do) and remove the other pair of screws holding middle part in.
4. loosen 2 screws holding climate control section and seperate from middle console.
5. Unplug Hazard light switch and old radio.
Now that you have the middle part of the center console removed
6. take out 2 screws and your done, old player may also be held in bymetal strips either side of the player. just bend them up and slide it out.
7. Slide the new player into desired posistion and screw it in using the screws you got with it
The only problem i had with mine was that there was no REM wire coming out of my HU, 12V tester helped me find the right one :)
