Well I finally got all the gear together and dropped the beast off at the car audio place today.

Only to have them call me a couple hours later to tell me that the pioneer 6x9's I've just bought won't fit. The basket is too wide and it's touching the boot opening rails. Plus they are a bit too big for the hole from the factory's anyway.

I've read the KL thread - same problem. I suggested spacers to the guy, and he said he will see what he can do. What I don't understand is how spacers work with the rear shelf. Like, if you have spacers, obviously the factory grills won't fit over the top, so then you put...the new speaker grills over I guess? But then, new grills oval, factory grills rectangular. I don't get what people have done to get around this. Need help and advice please :)

Post pics if you've got em. My brain works better visually :P

what i did was i put spacers on my cadence 6x9 speakers (as you said) they were about 1cm ish at the front and bout 1.5 cm at the back. i angled em away from the rails.
then i put mor spacers on the stock covers. i wouldnt be putting the speaker covers that came with the speakers on cos it will look ass. unless you wanna reline your parcel shelf lol

So you have the stock covers on. Any chance of a pic or a MS paint diagram? I'm not sure what you mean about "i put mor spacers on the stock covers.". Need help asap, they are installing as we (type) and he said if he can't figure it out, he won't do it:doubt:

Who's the genius doing the install?! If they work in a car audio place they should know how to install spacers if there is clearance issues. This is why I DIY my installs

For the benefit of whoever's installing it, screw Aerpro MDF 6x9 spacers onto existing speaker mounts, which are on top of the parcel rack under the grilles *duh*. This extra half inch in height should provide the right amount of clearance for your speaker baskets and magnets.

Yeah. They just called me and said 'Uh it can't be done'. So I went down there, and I say, surely, there is some way that putting these in is possible with some sort of spacer. The guy says that 'It can be done but it would look ****. We have a reputation to uphold so we don't do installs that look ****'. I was like, look, I just want it installed. I'm sure there is some happy medium between getting these things in there and it looking like ****". He was like, I'll see what I can do, if I can, I can, if not, too bad. Customer service plus

So now I'm stressing that he's gonna go 'too hard basket its friday' and I'm going to be left with half an install.

im thinking you should tell him to stick it, and either go somewhere else or do it yourself. if he cant fit simple spacers he is not worthy of doing your whole install

It'll be going under the parcel shelf carpet anyway, the grille mounts have a fair bit of clearance to where their bolts go down through the shelf, plus they can sit there unbolted and still look pretty and not move.

If he can't do it, instruct him to both repeat high school and forcibly insert the box that the 6x9's came from into his anus.

lol lol lol

That would be even funnier if he didn't have my car right now.

I just called them back for an update - the front desk guy said it's not looking like it's going to work, but the installer is still trying.

I wish someone had pics. I want to explain to them what you guys are saying but I can't visualise it. Well, explain your methods, not the box anus etc

I think he was saying that the main issue was that if the height was raised by putting spacers in, the grilles would be too high to put in...

Okay, if they were originally charging me $350 to install HU, splits, amp and 6x9's, how much do I offer the $#(*%$ers if/when they fail.

buy them a slab....thats all it should cost to get a stereo put in. next time get a mate to give you a hand and do it yourself, its not rocket science.

Yep. All I need is a slab and a mate. Moved over to Perth, don't know anyone (well not anyone with magna stereo experience). Yep that sucks, so I'm moving back to SA in a month.

In case you're searching and you find this thread - putting spacers under the speakers in a TL may not work as there is not a lot of clearence between the stock retangular grille and the chasis.
I've got 3 way clarions for rear fill and they only just fit under the grille.
I found with mine there was a slight lip angled towards the centre in the factory cutouts.
I needed to gently straighten them to make them vertical so the speaker cage/basket would drop right in and sit flush on the chasis and not touch the grille.

I guess some speakers just wont fit.... I had the same prob with a set of Infinity Kappa 6x9s, the basket on those suckers is massive and it just wasnt possible to get in there. i had to take them back and go with the reference series 6x9s.
