i own a 98 advance auto i started her up this arvo to find a weird noise coming from near the timing belt? it sounds like something rubbing like a bit of teared belt hitting on something its due for a timing belt to be replaced but there too damn expensive to get done and i dont wanna risk driving the car can someone help me out?

If your concerned then its probably best to get the timing belt done. If the belt snaps, your in a world of pain
Have a look at the external belts to make sure they're ok

If your external belts are ok you better get the timming belt changed if thats where the noise is comming from. Otherwise its going to cost you alot more moolah if it does break. After all you did say its due for replacement.

Marty, how many k's has your car done? has it ever had its belt replaced?

its done 227,000km i bought it at 220,000km and dont have the log book which suxs im not sure if it got replaced at the 195 service or not is there any way of taking the plastic cover off to have a look at the condition of the belt?
spend a couple of hundred and get the belt changed ASAP, or lose the engine. Simple as that.

a few hundred now will save 1500-2000+ in the long run, not to mention not having a car for a few days/weeks/months
