View Full Version : Transplanting extractors into a TL

I've come to the point with my TL now where I'm considering extractors.

The problem I've got at the moment is that the TL's cat convertor is enormous, about 50% larger than the cat fitted to the TE-TJ Magnas. This further complicates things by forcing me to modify (to accomodate the larger cat) whichever extractors I end up getting, which I've narrowed down to either HPC coated Pacemakers, or HPC coated RPW Street extractors.

This is a pretty specific question, but if I got the cat to muffler pipe from say, a TJ, would I be able to transplant it into the TL, so as I don't have to cut and weld the extractors?

I know this sounds pretty picky, but I'm a bit fussy about leaving my car at an exhaust shop, and I want to be able to completely reverse anything I do to this car, in the event that I ever sell it.

Thanks guys.

cant see why youcouldnt use a cat from a tj, are you replacing the rest of the exhaust as well when you get the extractors on?

Nup, just the engine pipes. I didn't actually think of just getting the cat; I had it in my mind they were fixed for some reason. Cheers :)

Andrew keep in mind when it comes to extractors, often you really need a larger flex pipe section to see the real benefits, or IMO it's not worth bothering at all. For this reason I like the RPW "Race" headers, as they come with a 2.5" Y/flex pipe section. Add the cost of getting your exhaust shop to make this up when fitting Pacemakers or similar, and the price difference is far less.

IMO/experience most of the time it pays off to go to that bit of extra effort/expense to do things "properly". My recent dyno figures appear to back this up, seems doing the whole exhaust properly gives much better results than just part of it. E.g the best headers in the world can't scavenge properly if the rest of the exhaust doesn't flow right as a whole.

I have the centre section of my factory exhaust sitting in a box, you are welcome to it if you want. Though the cat I chucked cos it was stuffed when it came out.

I'm a bit confused by what you say, what does the size of your cat have to do with it? To my knowledge Pacies (or the RPW copies/clones) don't come with a flex pipe section anyway, so you'd be mating the headers to your factory section, or getting a new one made. Am I misunderstanding something?

Our exhaust goes 2 banks of headers-->merge/Y-pipe-->flex pipe section-->CAT-->centre section with centre muffler/resonator--->rear pipe section-->rear muffler.

I assume it's the same for TLs, or is CAT placement different?

Just to let you know, if you want to use a cat from a TJ, most places WILL NOT do it for you as it is illegal to put on a second hand cat. Even if it is in better condition. Dont bother with a new TJ unit because im sure a brand new high flow cat will be cheaper.

A quality metal-cored cat will cost around $300, higher depending on size. I'm sure a second hand CAT from the wreckers costs much less. Though while you're at it IMO it's worthwhile doing the CAT.

They will go right on dude with out haveing to modify anything (that's my experience) but remember pacemakers have a 2.5" outlet and the exhaust there going on to is 2.25" so there will be a bottle neck there
