Hey All,
Whacked some new cv's in my 89 TP 5spd today and now its developed this horrible vibration!
its generally around 2-3 gear and between 2-3thou rpm!
had a look at my work about 50 times over and i cant see any problem
removed the split pin, undid the castle nut, removed the 19mm bolt holding the lower control arm on, removed both cv's and did the reverse for putting them back in, replacing the split pins and re-filling the gearbox with the required oil!
i did have a little trouble getting the left cv out and was wondering if ive disturbed anything at all!
help!!!
thanks all

wheel balance and alignment it?
always important when you take off anything like that on the front end.

nar havent had any of that done, although it drove perfectly before hand, so thats why i cant work it out
still drives perfectly straight though!
wheels were only balanced around 2 weeks ago
man this is irritating me!

well, the balance isnt as important, but the alignment is

make sure you fitted the cv joint all the way into the spline of the intrim shaft
the circlip is needed on that cv you had trouble getting out
thats normal if it isnt there on the drivers side you loose the gearbox oil
did you torque up the outer nut as tight as you could
and dont rule out a faulty new CV joint
I would look at your engine mounts
take a few pictures if you can

thanks for that magna buff! just to clarify, what do you mean by the circlip is needed? it was the left side (passenger) that i had trouble getting out
doesnt appear to be leaking any gearbox oil
got the cv's from A&F driveshafts, cost me $140 for both n installed them myself
as for the castlenut, i did it up tight with a 3/4" impact gun

The left joint has a lay shaft which has a circlip that holds the inner DOJ joint to it, if this is not located you will have this issue.
Also, removal of the ball joint as opposed to the strut bolts, will mean that the allignment will have changed little and either way the allignment would ahve to be a mile out to cause that sort of thing.
usually with outer joints, on coast around 60k's you will get a drone and vibration, inner doj joints you will get vibration on accel around the speed you mention.
140 for the pair, well that tells me you have purchaed reco rubbish as usually you get a new outer, reco inner (reco DOJ joints are fine) for usually about 120ish each
Take the car to where you got the joints, they will soon tell you if you have a sus shaft

as above I think you have been sold faulty CV joints in the drive shafts
dont let them blame you dammage during installation
try to get another set or refund and try a more reputable firm
circlips should be on both inner CV joints

thanks for the replies guys - went to a family friends today, whom is a mechanic and he said the same thing - dodgey drive shafts - told me to take em back n see if i can get another set
he also recommended getting a new set, as they arnt that much more expensive than the reco ones
i didnt realise they were so cheap - thought they were around the 300odd mark!
will keep everyone posted on how i go
