Hi,
Im new to the Magna experiance. I have a TL for a work vehicle for about another 3 months before i upgrade to teh 380.
I have never driven a TL but must say its an absolute pleasure to drive, the only down side is its turning circle!!!!
I do have a question for anyone who can help. It does go quite well in 1st gear, after that it dies in the ****. I think its because 2nd gear (its a 4 speed auto) is so tall. You can wind it out to about 160kms an hour! which is jut plane stupid after 1st gear is over after about 70km. So is this normal? I know some other car manufactures allow different diff gearing if requested, im wondering whether this has happened with mine, although 4 gear seems normal at cruising in the RPM department?
It would be such a better car acceleration wise if 2nd gear was lower.
So again, is this normal for the otherTL drivers out there?

Pretty much. The 4 speed is the worst gearbox for having a bit of fun. Unfortunately we're stuck with the diff ratio that Mitsubishi gives us, because the diff is contained within the transaxle, and there's very little aftermarket support in this area, whereas RWD cars can have pretty much any ratio slotted in.
The 5 speed, on the other hand, is quite good lol
I agree with that, unfortunately there is not much you can do about it unless you throw, too much, money against it.

You could try fitting some 10" wheels...(along with smaller brakes)

I have had mine at an indicated 160+kmh in 2nd (just before the kink at Wakefield). I think it was close to 6400rpm. I couldn't be bothered doing the maths on gear and diff ratios to work out exactly how fast it was.
I think my max speed at Wakefield was 159kmh (measured using a Performance Box), but I wasn't holding it in 2nd for as long on those laps. because the 'box won't drop into 1st if you're going more than 50kmh () it's possible to a fairly quick time without changing gears for the whole lap!
if you could change down into 1st, there's probably another 5-10kmh to be had on the straight (and the time gains associated).

thats probably the TF 3.0L gear box with different ratios and final ratios to the 3.5L gear box ratios.

...
My ralliart is doing 100~110 @ 6500rpm in 2nd... but 160+? :doubt:

That sounds about right, and the first gear issue is crappy, i have noticed that too. Put your foot down at 50km, stays in second gear and could not pull skin of custard.
So looks like the tall gearing is a standard thing then, oh well. Now that i think about it, Fords are pretty similar, but i guess there added torque makes it less noticable.
Its still a nice car to drive, that compensates enough.
If i could find a nice example in a 5 speed, i dare say i would snap it up pretty quick

I find that to, with my TJ Advance, the 1st gear reaches nearly 80 kph before changing to 2nd at WOT, I have heard that the ratios are far better with the 5 speed auto filling in the flat spots which exist with the 4 speed auto.
With mine 1st is too tall, 2nd slightly too tall, and 3rd too short, it really is a pity because unless you were to break the law you really never get to see the brilliance of the sweet 3.5 engine it appears that my car would be at it's best between 100 and 200 kph which is useless on a public road, a manual would be much better.
Some say the 4 speed tiptronics go better but unless there is any difference with the tippy 4 speed's ratios I can't see how it would make a difference except for holding onto lower gears more easily which you can do anyway with the non tippy 4 speed.
