just buy a v6:P
G'day mate,
The 2.6 litre Astron II engines are pretty good on fuel, however just like any other car there's a heap of variables that also alter fuel consumption. Firstly, is it EFI or carby? My TR is a carby and thus is fairly inefficient on fuel, for example. Tyre pressure, and the general well-being of the fuel system in your car will be other factors that alter the fuel consumption. To give you an idea, i run my car on Shell V-Power (98 octane), and go through about 50 litres a week, which usually gets me anywhere from 320-400kms driving, thats suburban driving though. When im at uni and im doing a 45 min drive to lilydale and back 2-3 days a week, ill get around 500 out of a tank.
As for the head gasket, couldn't give you an exact quote but its a little expensive. What is the asking price for the car? How many kms has the engine got on it? You can use the fact that the head gasket has gone to barter for a cheaper price, thus covering the cost of the repair.
That's my 2 cents, all the best with the car hunt, the TRs can be a great, reliable car if you look after them!

from the 4 astron magnas ive known well compared to mine is say get the v6, its a much nicer motor and fuel is fine, i get 500km's to a tank and have gotten as much as 650, if you can find 1 in manual go for it
as long as its not a carby engine then it should be fine, but the V6 is a better engine. bout the same on petty, maybe even a bit less, but more power and a smoother motor imo.

my mum had a 2.6 carby on her old 1st gen, when she went to look at a new car around town the dealer in the yard asked her what she had now and she pointed out the magna and the dealer was first to point out the fuel guzzling ability of the car, the car did use a bit of fuel but it wasnt that extreme, just dealers doing their job i suppose, funny thing is they were trying to get her into a 97 4 litre falcon, and they STILL reckoned the falcon used less fuel then the astronlol

funny you should say that in my experience on the highway my v6 used more than my mates ea falcon, probably cos at 110km/h his sits under 2000rpm and mine at 3000rpm.
