View Full Version : TR trans issues?
Howdy All,
Well last night Jo's TR decided it would die on her.
She called me up to say the engine light flashed on and off a few times and then the car died. (thats all the info I could get out of her)
Anyhow, we managed to get it started and drove it home.
Once I got it home, i removed the TB and gave it a clean aswell as dropped the oil out incase there was to much in there. (oil was fine btw)
Now here is where im sure ive done something wrong (or havent connected something)..
Since putting the TB back on, the auto gearbox will not engage 1st, 2nd, 3rd, D without some effort on the throttle. (when you put your foot down the car moves forward with some effort but it feels like the brake is still engaged...)
Reverse is fine.
So, what have i done? or has something else gone kaput?
TPS? TCU? Solenoid?

Thanks for the offer marty.
Im going to check a few things today and see if i can find out what the issue is.
Hopefully its something as simple as not connecting a hose correctly.

It sounds like you need to test the ECU and TCU as the control the gears. Alot of issues relating to gears are caused by these computers. Sometimes it can be as easy as disconnecting the battery, but if somethings melted or fried then test the above.
How's the condition of the Auto?
Oil colour?
No metal flakes?
Did Over-drive work?
A/T mode?
Does it turn over, run, then check engine flashes?
If its all good the TPS/fuel relay/solenoid comes into play.
A Full flush, disconnect the battery first test. Make sure everythings in correctly, check all hoses, all connections, look for leaks, listen for any strange noises, etc.

Wouldnt you just check the dipstick.....
If the problem has only come about after refitting the throttle body, its most likely TPS related. Did you remove the TPS? If so you'll have to reset it.
Check the stored fault codes, or have them read by an autoelec. That'd be a good starting point mate, seeing as how the light flashed on.
(when you say engine light, you mean the 'check engine' light, or the oil pressure light?)

Solution found guys.
Thanks for all the tips! So much good info held in all those minds out there!
I decided i would flush the trans.. Did this and found that it was almost burnt in colour aswell as being only 3litres in there!
Checked the fluid levels in the magna book and found it requires 7.5 litres!
Filled it up.
Runs smooth as now.

Glad to see you found the fault.
Check for leaks mate! Auto's dont 'use' fluid. They only lose it.
