View Full Version : I'm sure this isn't good!
Hey guys and gals,
got a slight prob here which i have been meaning to put up here for a bit but never got around to it. so here goes.
as most of you know its a 95 TS exec, list of mods look at my profile...
when i fill her up i get what looks like a liquid residue running from the fuel filler flap down the side of the car...now i hope its petrol cos i dont really want other liquids in my tank lol but i kinda dont want it to be petrol cos well...BOOM! :flame:
see pic to see what i mean
now, i could understand it happening if i overfilled the tank, but then again isnt there an overflow for that kind of thing...
but this happens when i put like 35-40 ltrs in on a near empty tank so i know that its no where near overflowing.
any ideas?
oh, and before anyone states the obvious yes the filler cap is on and tightened, two clicks as i have always done

From memory when I had my KS, it should be at least 5 clicks. But as Fantaysia pointed
out, you sure it not some neighbours dog pissing on it? Need to wipe it with a soft clothe
and sniff it to see if it is petrol or dog piss.
From the picture, it is very much like dog piss, otherwise there would've been streaks
above the chrome strip as well.

Get a small bit of rag and wipe off as much as possible. CAREFULLY (away from the car) light it (the rag, not the stain on the car:doh: ) and see if it burns.
If it burns well, its probly petrol, possibly your filler cap drain is blocked, use a bit of fairly stiff wire to clean it out.
Try a different fuel cap too, yours may be stuffed :)

Most likely reason.
We had an old Fiat that used to do that. The seal on the fuel cap was bung..
Replaced and resolved.
If i were you, id be getting wiping that off the car daily as the stain can go into the paint pigments.
thanks guys :doubt:
dog piss :bowrofl: its petrol, i knowthis already, smells of petrol, and petrol is the only fluid near that part of my car, and even tho you cant really see it in the photo it is def coming out of the fillier flap.
and yes i clean it off asap.
so this means that pertrol is rising all the way to the filler cap? and then leaking out? will try a different filler cap, do mitsi sell these new or get one from a wreckers? kinda something that i would want to get as new to play it safe.
possibly your filler cap drain is blocked...where is this? never heard of it before

It should be a little hole just underneath where you put the nozzle in.
Fixing the drain hole wont fix the leak. Before replacing the cap, try closing it with 3 more
clicks as I mentioned bofore and also leave a clean piece of rag in the compartment and
then go for a drive to see if it leaks or not. If it still leaks then the cap is stuffed.

This is one of the things I like about AMC & it's members.
Such a simple problem, something small and probably easily fixed but some of us may not know the answer or have somebody else to ask.
Some forums would eat you alive and laugh - this forum offers helpful suggestions and advice (along with a bit of light hearted humour to make things better).
Well done guys!
