View Full Version : My first car =] [Help on getting priorities straight]

Alright, I'm 16 going on 17 and a while ago bought my first car, a red '96 TE Magna Executive [3L].
It drives a charm and overall I am very very satisfied.
But now coming up on getting my P's i'm looking to do get it out of stocko condition.
I'm thinking of getting my audio up and running first and then worrying about rims/kits/wings/lights and whatever.
I'd like some advice on upgrades though, I'm not exactly sure what I should do with it, the engine's fine, but I do want to do exterior and interior stuff as well as my audio.
Audio isn't too much of a problem at the moment as I got it with a Pioneer head unit and 6x9's in place of the stocko 6x9's so it's not excruciatingly bad to listen to. I've got seat covers and a steering wheel cover.. that's about it for now.. Oh and tinting will have to come in somewhere aswell.
What's the first thing you guy's reckon screams at you that needs doing.
Thanks =], just ask if you want more pic's or info on it.

welcome

search is your friend - many of these things have been asked before
most stuff from the 3rd gen range can be applied to any of the cars from the range.

start with clear sidemarkers - around 25bucks from mitsu for the clear 380 ones.
instant difference.

other than that - enjoy your stay, much to learn here

start small and cheap and set goals for big items. for example try to organise to get rims by the end of the year or whatever, it's much easier if you've got a goal to reach.

best bet would probably be to get clear indicators from mitsu which cost around $25 for both (not sure if bulbs are included) then work your way up the price chain.

i agree with doddski's comment on the 380 side indicators.

Next i'd say lowering... some lows or superlows, and decent shocks should set it apart from the stockers

Do u really use the towball? Get rid of it :)

umm then when you have the cash, some good rims.

oh, and please no Mitsubishi or Ralliart stickers :P

and maybe also debadge the back (take the badges off)... should clean it up a bit :)

Alrighty, I'll start havin' a go at those indicators ASAP, when you say get em off mitsu, where would I actually go to do that? Is there an official site or would I have to ring em up to find a retailer that'll stock em?

call up a Mitsu dealership, talk to their spare parts section, quote part number MN169192, and you want 2x that (each side).
Should be $20-$25

or just wander into the spare parts department of mitsu one day and make them hunt for the part numbers themselves to work for the dollar lol.
if they dont have them instock - which is unlikely considering its a current model car, they should be able to get them in overnight for you (shouldnt be an extra charge for that either)

Sweet as, sounds easy enough, another thing, I haven't done much with car electronics before, I'm guessing these go in place of the orange ones right? I have no idea how they attach or wire up or any of that.. Does anyone have a little bit of insight into how it all works =] thanks

easy as, the old ones just unclip, pull the wiring loom off (you know what they look like yeah? :P ), push the loom onto the clear ones, and clip the new ones back on :) easy start to car modding lol

the clear lenses also come with the amber bulbs :) all totally legal

I'm the same, i got given a 1986 TM Magna and it's still stock standard and i want to do some mods to it but dont know where to start. I've put in a CD player and i've got two 12" subs in box but haven't put them in yet coz i need an amp but not sure weather to get a 2 channel or 4 channel amp. I also need amp wiring kit, once i've got them i can put the subs in. I mainly want to consentrate on the exterior at the moment so if anyone can give me ideas would be great.
Cheers:shifty:

you just push it towards the front of the car and pull it out with ur fingers. it is meant to make a little snapping sound when you pull it out but don't be too rough or you will actually snap it :P Then you simply unplug the little wiring plug and plug in the new one and pop it back in... did mine the other day, look soo much better!

Oooh, yeah that does look good =]. And it's got the amber light inside right? Too easy, I've got the money, I've just gotta find time between school and work to get a couple, and not being able to drive without my parent's (yet) doesn't help haha.

HAHA and just checking your other post's and stuff, my name's Aaron aswell.. and so was the dude who I bought my Magna off.. That's weird as dahahha

Ditto for the mudflaps too. All they do is look daggy - they should only be put on 4WDs imo. You'll have to ditch them when you lower the car anyway so you may as well get rid of them now.

oh, and please no Mitsubishi or Ralliart stickers :P

Listen to this man. Huge decals and a big cannon on the back will make your car look non-stock but it won't necessarily make it look better :P

Spackbace

actually, i kept my rear mudflaps on after lowering, but only as protection and cause theyre colour coded anyways :)

I've been jumping the gun nd looking at rims already ^^ I'm just wondering if any of you's have ideas on prices (with tyres) on the RJR Chopper's from http://www.bobjane.com.au/Wheels/ or anywhere i suppose, that's just the link I have, cheers

Spackbace
01-02-2008, 09:57 PM
yeah they look ok, not sure on prices.

to be honest, that colour red is gonna be hard to get rims for. personally i'd say chrome would look best (hardly ever recommend chrome, but there ya go lol), just because the red is so bright...

18" wheels and tyres can be $1500+, and you'd wanna lower it straight after getting new rims as well, so maybe save up a bit more and just wait it out ;)

ur only young, nothing wrong with a stocko for now :)

yea mate the ones you were talking about do look good, but a suggestion it is one thing looking on the net and trying to picture what they would look like on you car compared to going down to a shop and seeing it up against your car. if you live in brissie there is a good shop in aspley called superior tyres, they are the mob that hooked be up with my rims. the price was not to bad and the tyres are great.

Yeah true, I'll just keep saving for a while till i can afford 18's then I'll go have a look around, I'm puttin away $155 a week, so it shouldn't take that long, saving's the worst part of it haha

also remeber that Bobjane on occasion do offer 12-15months interest free its how i brought my rims.

doubt a 16/17yo would get credit for it... and besides, at that age its best to save up for the rims... makes ya feel better :)

Yeah, I'll just stick it out, another thing I'd like to look around for is the clear taillights, would you get those from mitsu aswell or would you go aftermarket? Around how much are ya talking for just the rear set?

Spackbace
02-02-2008, 04:57 PM
now now dont rice too much...

theyre mainly only sold on ebay

personally i'd keep an eye out for second hand rims and get king lows, if you can install them yourself it means you can be lowered for low $200s and budget the rest of a grand for some rims.

magna00
02-02-2008, 05:18 PM
yeah the aftermarket clear ones for te-th arent that nice imho not to mention they are not adr approved and can hinder an insurance payout in the event of an accident. Just upgrade them to a TH unit from the wreckers or another member and do a light tint on them

Tessa403
02-02-2008, 05:56 PM
I'd go in this order,
Tint,
Stereo with Blue Tooth,
Wheels(2nd hand it's not anew car ya pimping)
Exhaust (make it sound tough).

But thats me if I was your age and hanging for my car to be cool.

Sycrat
02-02-2008, 06:13 PM
Yeah, tint sounds good first (for major mod anyways) or speakers, I'll have to decide between those two, I have a feeling I might go for the audio though heh, love my music =]
