y0.

One of my 19"s is a diff color to the other 3 so its getting painted to match the rest.
anyway, when i had purcahsed my rims, the previous owner to the owner who i had purcahsed them off had gone over the rims in that **** $3 clear stuff

Spray shop needs me to remove the cheap enamel clear off the top (its peeling away you can scratch it off with your nails) so they can color match it.
He's like try thinners, So i got some thinners but Ive never used thinners before, so i wasnt too sure how i applied it? Like do i need to dilute it and rub it in, or just rub it on and hope for the best? paint stripper is an obvious no no, what else could i use?

I really need some advice on how to get rid of this crap!

how could you dilute thinner? its oil based... add water and you'll see the different density layer...

i say just rub thinner over the surface and hope for the best

cant really dilute thinners, as it is the diluter. If that makes sense.

thats soooooo doggy imagine................ :shifty:

wont they need to rub it back anyway to paint, how about wet and dry and sand it off.

if the stuff is going to come off with thinners, just pour some on a rag and give the wheel a rub. the finish underneath is unlikely to be affected as the paint wheels are painted with is a highly durable enamal finish that shouldn't come off with thinners. if it does then some one has likely painted your wheels at some point and your best bet is to have them all repainted in 2 pack paint.

Well they are only doing 1 wheel, so i gave them another wheel to color match off, only thing being of course the rest of the wheels have that flakey crap on it.
I'll give all methods a go, I really hate rubbing liquids into paint i have never used before really scares me, but the wheels looks like they have original shadow chrome paint on them so i doubt it wouldnt be an enamel finish

Thanks dood!

what colour you painting them?

why not powercoat instead... if you can do that in the colour you want...

also do not white wall...

trust me white walls on sporty type wheels on sporty type cars FAIL badly and will not suit your car... looks good as it is, just needs lowering :P

I had the same clear coat stuff peeling of the rims on my old Cordia. Made them look like crap.

I tried thinners first but it was too weak to do anything. Ended up having to use paint stripper which worked well and got it all off. Obviously my rims wern't painted though so that wasn't an issue. Looked 100 times better after i did it.

Sandblast.
yeah, dont do that. sandblasters make short work of soft alloy rims. if you were going to blast it, soda blasting is your best bet. if its the stuff i think it is i reckon you will end up rubbing back the whole wheel to get the crap off, and then probably the whole set as the repainted wheel will look heaps better than the other 3. good luck.

Yeah thinners didnt work too well, neither did 2000G or cutters.
I dont wanna do all 4 as only 1 rim needs to be repainted....
Bit of a shame but ill ask him to color match it as best as he can.

nah andrewD when i get the $ i reckon it'll look **** hot
