Driving to my parents house this morning, after about 20 minutes of playing fine, (and not even that loud) my sub just stopped working! Oh no! When I got to my parents house about 5 minutes later, (longest 5 minutes of my life!) I opened the boot with much trepidation. A strange smell assaulted my nostrils and after a quick check of the amp + fuses, I realised the sub had popped itself. The magnet was extremely warm to the touch and the whole shebang smelt of burnt plastic. After letting it all cool down for 10 minutes, I hooked it up again, turned on the stereo, and lo and behold the sub sounded like a giant fart machine, its stuffed!!!
Its all set up as we discussed at the audio store, so I'm hoping warranty will cover it. Spewin' as , coz it was in for only like 2 days!!!

i dont think your sub matched your amp.
your amp was a 400RMS @ 2 ohms
and your sub was 300rms @ 4 ohms
i'd say your amp crapped itself, check the fuses.
your amp would be struggling to push out the power needed.
you should have got a 2 channel amp and bridged it to 4 ohm eg.
Sony ZX350.2
175RMS @ 2ohms x2, Bridged = 350RMS @ 4ohms
i think the tech guru at the audio store must have been new, or an error in communication

Sub is a dual voice coil 4ohm and 4ohm, bridged and connected to the amp so it provides a 2 ohm load.
And the amp is 400WRMS at 14.4V, where according to my voltmeter my battery makes around 13.7V, so closer to 350-380WRMS anyway

just throwing is out there but, could you have hooked up a single voice coil and overpowered it with the amp? check the jumper. wouldnt have a clue why the sub crapped itself? my money would have been on the amp.

Thats what I thought. I pulled the sub out of the box and the jumpers are in the right place according to the diagrams I got with it. We even pulled the sub out in the shop before I bought it and the bloke showed me which terminals to bridge and where to connect the speaker wiring. Not happy. But thats what warrantys for I guess. :doubt:

AFAIK the installation warranty only covers professional installation at authorised stores unfortunately. the product warranty covers defects of the product and the product wasnt defected when you bought it. itll be a hard uphill battle trying to prove that you didnt stuff it up

Might see if i can talk my way around it. The bloke at the audio shop seemed like a good fella, and we discussed the install for a while. If not, well, tough titties for me.

thats like saying a new car was bought without problems and then cant get warranty when something goes wrong a couple of days later:nuts: That's what warranties are for, if something goes wrong within the warranty period it can be rectified, even if it means repairing the original. It will be a battle also to say that he did. It could be claimed the shop assistant made an error.
good luck mate.

No because new car warranties have clauses too.
Ie, all servicing/maintenance must be carried out on schedule, and by a dealership or an accredited workshop. If not, then the warranty may be void.
I understand what you're saying, that it was only a matter of days, but who knows what the owner of a new car could do to it in a 2 day period. (ie fill crankcase with coolant instead of oil).
might want to try and isolate the problem before you go in. like try the sub with a different amp and the amp with some different speakers to see which one is cooked.
bad luck tho man, hope you get it all worked out

Dude what you running?
Even though you had you gains set ok, I bet your EQ / Sub control / Loud and / or bass boost where all not set to off or 0...
You have fried the crap out of the voice coil my friend. That is abuse and rarely covered by warranty.

I listen to rock/metal music so I don't have homie g levels of bass. I had the eq on the head unit set to "natural," bass boost on the amp set to 0dB bass boost on the head unit set to 2 out of 6... basically running low, or else my tunes sound poor as.
