there is a bulb wired into the loom at the ignition on some models

verada have it

my guess is you undo all the screws around
the lower plastic cover around the steering wheel

and that loom and bulb should become visable to replace

Pretty sure a TS SE should have 'em; quick way to tell is whether it's got a clear ring around the ignition or a black one. Clear = light, black = no light.

As magna buff said, unscrew the panel under the steering wheel, and it's right there. Bulb is a T5 from memory.

If you don't have one fitted, it's pretty easy to retrofit one; just grab one from the wreckers, and wire it in to your footwell light (though I think the SE and Verada have it going through ETACS, so you get a delay before it turns off).

[EDIT] wrote that while you were posting your response obviously...

I've got an exec and am looking to retrofit one. Will the exec have the wiring for the footwell light already there or will I have to connect it to something else?

Any help is appreciated,
Cheers

That's work fine I 'spose but then it doesn't seem all that useful to have to keep the door open to keep the ignition light on. If the doors open you might as well just use the interior lights to find the ignition. Is there any other way to get a delay one the light as someone just mentioned?

ok i replaced the bulb and then the stupid thing wouldnt turn off, closed the door walked away came back 5 mins later and it was still on, pulled it out a few times and kept retrying until i got frustrated and gave up, ended up replacing the bulb in the ashtray instead, what would be broken to cause the bulb to stay on?
edit: one of the times i tried the bulb turned off after i closed the door after a few moments, but after that it wouldnt work again...

A delay circuit is really simple and can be made using just a few components and only a couple of connections to the wiring (-ve ground only). I made them using "dead bug" construction and potted in epoxy. Years ago I put one in the interior light in my Celica plus I made a light for the driver's door keyhole that worked for 10 seconds after pulling up the handle. There was no remote central locking on it at that point.

Alternately an aftermarket delay unit can be bought on ebay and various car places. Silicon Chip designed a universal one back in 2004. A kit KC5392 can be bought from Jaycar for $19.95.

I'm going to add one to my TE's interior light as well as add some footwell lights. I have some puddle lights for the doors that I'll pop in when I'm finishing up the power windows and might look for an ignition key light solution for it. I don't really want to have to make the ring.
