I know there have been a few threads regarding blocking off the egr on the 3.5 magnas etc. I blocked mine off on the weekend by popping down to repco and picked up a (what they told me) VX commodore sump plug which threaded in perfectly to the egr outlet on the extractors/ exhaust manifold, and used a gasket and a aluminium can cut out for the plenum side.

For others contemplating disabling of the EGR.
I did some investigating a couple of years back by placing a vac guage on the vac line which operates the EGR valve, and found that the EGR only operates momentarily under certain engine load/ throttle position combinations. It does not operate under wide throttle openings.
You can disable the EGR merely by disabling the vac solenoid which controls it. ie by removing the electrical connector onto the right hand vac solenoid near the front fuel rail. There are three, the third one is for EGR control.
Of course if you are fitting extractors with no EGR outlet then it must be physicaly blocked off as described by Magtone

Make way Blonde comming through......
What does the EGR do and what advantages are there to blocking it?
blocking off the EGR will also land you in trouble with the law. It will cause your emissions to increase and will probably fail its rego/pink slip on emissions

Egr is where the exhaust gasses are recirculated back into the plenum and mixed with fresh air as to reduce emmissions exiting the car. I am taking it off to reduce transferred heat from exhaust to plenum, which will also make the cai more effective as well as reduce carbon build up. This may make you car illegal if tested roadside, however I think one member removed and still passed a emmisions test but did have an ecu tune.

when would the rta just have random tests lol
not like it'd do much anyway... the magna is like EURO-1 compliant or something isnt it?
i think your 10000k old cat convertor would make the tailpipe emissions worse than blocking the egr, which as ppl have said isnt always operational anyway

There are three primary automotive emissions causing air pollution, carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) is designed to reduce the emission of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.
The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system lowers the nitrogen oxide.
When the air/fuel mixture combustion temperature is high, a large quantity of NOx is generated in the combustion chamber. Therefore, EGR recirculates part of emission gas from the exhaust to the combustion chamber through the intake manifold to decrease the air/fuel mixture combustion temperature, resulting in reduction of NOx.

Its the cops that do the roadside emissions tests

Never had an emissions test for a pink slip. Even on my 15 year old lancer.

True... it operates when there is high vacuum, (ie; under light throttle cruise conditions). But it doesnt pickup off manifold vacuum, it picks up at the throttle body right before the butterfly in the high velocity zone, which is why it doesnt operate at idle.
If magnas use a PWM solenoid activated EGR valve, and you disconnect it, you'll get fault codes. Its a much more complicated system than you think.
Leave it as is, you wont get any gain.. and will most likely notice a drop in fuel economy if you remove it.

i did this on the missus pulsar (as they are prone to blocking and causing a flat spot at about 2500rpm). i found that fuel economy was worse as instead of using some recycled air it was sucking more air through the afm, so adding in more fuel to compensate.

Interesting..i haven't noticed this. Maybe it is more suited to people that have piggyback or replacement ecu's that can alter their fuel air to suit. Most 3.5's with extractors will not have this in use unless the egr was drilled out on the extractors when fitted.

the egr was set up when i had HM extractors installed as it's all factory style
when i took the top off the inlet plenum (sprintex kit) you could see the black **** that the egr lets back in... probably should have blocked it off, but cbf at the time... quite a ot of soot was in there and not much km was done...
