Hi Gang
I have a '93 TR, V6 Auto.
Suddenly lost overdrive. When it attempts to change to 4th, does not engage and engine spins freely. If I switch off overdrive, then drives well in 1-2-3.
Tranny was last serviced in Sept-07.
Serviced by an auto transmission specialist, used the correct fluid.
Done 10,000 Km since the service.
Fluid is clean, no leaks, level is good.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks
Steve

just replace the overdrive friction discs
there is a kit you can buy from any automatic spare parts shop
soak discs in auto oil for 2 hours prior to assembly
can be DIY ... box stays in the car
pic is an example of your overdrive
dont get ripped off with the old ""auto box needs a rebuild "" line

Took it to my tranny specialist today. He's pretty good. I didn't get the rebuild line. Quoted the overdrive disc kit plus full service, around $375.
Sounds OK to me.

Sometimes, if the over-drive dies, means the actualy transmission is suffering. If you loose a gear in the meantime you know it means trouble. This is usually how it starts off, however in saying that, if the gears are fine (you wont be able to tell) but any delays or reving sounds in acceleration are the start.
However, if bright red oil remains, no metal flakes, $375 is an alright price to replace the band. Id consider a re-build over-all if its not too pricey, but usually is. ($1000+)
Just a quick note, dont keep the over-drive on all the time, this is how it wears out faster, its better at 80kph
Overdrive -> then first gear -> rebuild/change over

i was always under the impression that it was better to leave the discs to soak overnight to make sure that they are well an truely soaked for good service life.
but since your paying someone else to do the job for you - they should know the correct length of time to soak the discs for ya :)
