Have been speaking with my Mitsu dealer regarding a towpak for a KL Verada that I am in the process of purchasing.

I have an option of the square receiver style, or traditional tongue version.

Thoughts anyone? The square is abviously more functional, but what's it looklike when the bar is removed? Would the traditional style with the tongue unbolted look better?

I have no idea?

no idea myself... i have the traditional tongue towbar version on my TL, it was fitted when i bought the car 2nd hand, if you want i can take pics so that you can compare it with a square receiver style when someone takes a pic of theirs

the tongue style would look a lot better because it wont be as noticable as a square type and being that the tongue units are bolted in they will less likely nicked rather then square type which use a pin and clip

while this is very true, on the same hand the square / removeable style will have advantages too.
when your not using it, just take it out and it doesnt stick out and look ugly so to speak.

personally - i would go the square type just to be able to easily remove it when i wasnt using it.

its not too hard to remove the tongue unit either its usually just 2 bolts. i just perfer them so people will have a harder time trying to knick the tongue and towball

I have the tongue type one on my TE and my parents have the square type on their BA falcon. I think the square type looks a lot neater as when you're not using the towbar you simply dont have the tongue attached so all you see is a small square cover in the rear bumper. Also you don't have to worry about the tongue/ball being stolen with the square type as when you're not using the towbar you don't have them attached!

Personally if I had the choice there's no way I would choose the tongue type as i think it looks cheaper. I can post a pic of my folks if u like but its only on a falcon not a magna...

I have a stock Mitsubishi tongue unit installed in my TJ AWD. Normally, the tow bar is unbolted and the original bumper filler piece put in place ( it can easily be popped in or out). This looks about as neat as possible, especially with the wiring plug screwed unobtrusively under the bumber.

The tongue types are perfectly satisfactory up to 1500 Kg tow weight, which is the limit for Magnas anyway. The box type tend to be more serious heavy duty, which is why you see them a lot on 4 x 4s and big SUVs.

This isn't a right / wrong thing, however. It's whatever you think looks or works best for you.

Towbars are sexy.

If I could get a bigger/beefier looking one put on my KJ I would do it.

You are all talking about how easy it is to remove/hide. Why? They don't look unattractive (either type) and they are great for if you get rear ended.

Personally i would get the square, i just like the look, you can get the pin things that can be locked so they cant nick the tongue, however i got the regular tongue one as it was the one on ebay :)

I have a square one on an '04 TL sedan. I purchased the car with the towbar already fitted. It has done some work, and I find that the holes and pin to fit it are a bit worn, and the set crew under to exert pressure on the square tube has broken off ( scraped on driveways etc.). Result is that the square section rattles a bit, and also jerks back and forth a little when towing.
I would choose the straight tongue with the two bolts if I had a choice, as it is rigidly bolted to the car.

Some may think towbars are ugly, but IMO this is uglier:

Guys thanks for the responses. I only ask as my local Mitsu dealer parts bod, tells me I can have the choice of both types, and both are rated at the 1500-1600kg that we all know about.

For me it is about the look, not having seen either on cars.

The advantage of a square receiver is that a modified tongue can be readily fitted in case of a different mount height being required, and of course the ability to readily remove and store. It could also perhaps be easier to connect load distribution gear to one of these hitches.

On the downside, perhaps a tongue version, with the tongue removed may look a little more discreet.

Choices choices.

Me thinks the square version.

When I get the vehicle I will supply some photos. I am also getting some ANZ 18 X 8 5+5 fitted to the Verada.

What is the cost difference between the two?

I also prefer the haymen reece type square hitch as it is easy to remove when not in use and look neat.......

I need to get a towbar for my KW AWD but am scared to ask prices at this stage.........

Very annoying not being able to hook a trailer up to the car.....

Thanks to another member who forwarded me a copy of the KL Verada brochure, I have photos of both via the .pdf brochure.

Local Mitsu dealer has quoted the following for the square hitch;

Towbar pkg sq hitch $339
Wiring pkg $40.10
Bracket pkg $21.40
Fitting $120
Price incl GST = 560.55

Pricing was very close over the phone between the two types. I think the square looks better. As for rattling noise, they all have a tension screw in addition to the main bolt which helps to locate the receiver and prevents jolting movements. However many have fallen out on cars that I have seen.

Veradas and Magnas require different tow bars. Magnas have the removable cutout in the
bumper to slot the tow hitch through. Veradas dont and hence require a different style bar.

See my sig for a picture of my install.
