View Full Version : Should we have a FAQ or Wiki??

There's an awful lot of discussions going around on the same topics time and again:
Timing chain replacement intervals myth
How to change my 4cyl timing "belt"
Do I need remove the engine to change it
How much does it cost
What's this rattling noise
Why is this 4cyl auto vibrating at idle
How do I install paras
and on and on...
You can read the shortness of patience in the replies to these questions.
Sure, people ought to search, or buy a workshop manual - but they don't. What the 2nd gen forum really needs is a FAQ or Wiki with all the useful basics in it. Then if the same questions are still being asked they could just be pointed to the FAQ and told to get on with it.
Any merit in this? Worth discussing? Even a few stickies might cover it. At present all we have is "post your ride", a brake mode and some long winded flame job on some fool who made an idiotic post (no idea why that's stickied).

IF you could narrow this down to one single problem:
Why is this 4cyl auto vibrating at idle
It would be interesting.
But the fact is no one can, people just guess.
Pcv valve, TB , auto, isc, tps , hoses, etc.
But yeah, some explained threads would be good for other topics.

I agree with TR 300000, I reckon there is some need for this sort of thing. As a newcomer there was a tonne of questions that I wanted answers to. Some of them I found in previous threads but then there were others that weren't quite giving me the answers I wanted. It's a great idea because as someone like me who doesn't have a lot of knowledge on this sort of stuff I don't like bugging the long term members about small things.
If it can happen I'll be one of the first people to check it all out, I've still got a few more questions to ask and I if I can prevent asking more questions it'd work out better for everyone.
Great idea, TR 300000.
No idea if this was setup by an AMC member or not but

It has decent amount of information about most magna models.

I don't think that one has been updated or added to in a long while. We need something based here on the forum pages or at least a commitment to write posts intended to be stickied at the top of the page. I'm happy to collate some information and write a few but I don't want to do it on my own.
The Turbobricks forum has a great sticky which links to threads on all commonly asked questions http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=26609 maybe this sort of thing would be useful for us?

Yeah, a wiki/faq for the second gens would be a good idea.

I know where you are coming from about the same questions getting repeated, but i'm always mindful of a few years ago a computer site was running then people started complaining about repetetive questions like what's better, Intel or AMD??.
Soon it had developed into, BEEN DISCUSSED HEAPS OF TIMES, USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION, RTFM, etc and started getting abusive...resulted in a lot of people becoming coy that their question was stupid and the end result was a lot fewer posts and eventually the site just died.
So maybe repetetive questions do lead to good debate and maybe different points of view are discussed...I feel it's very important that people don't feel like they can't ask an experienced person a question for fear of being flamed.
As you say, there is a shortness of patience in the replies, but I think that is more of a problem than the repetitive questions.

Dont ask should we have this. Make it, collate it and once it's running and looking good we'll sticky it

If there was a place to host it, i'd gladly put one up. Otherwise I have the articles from the old Magna Wiki archived from before the spam set in, if that's of any assistance.

I'll make one later and everyone can start searching for threads then mods can nazi moderate it so it only contains information.
It can cover everyday mods, fixes...
What template should be used?
TOPIC:
MODELS APPLICABLE:
LINKS:
DIFFICULTY: (ie to repair or modify yourself)......... add to this
Also should it only be links or information as well?

Sounds alright to me... Not sure if links will get too messy though? Its gonna be hard to keep it organised and clean of useless crap.. it really needs to be a forum of its own, but alas... we should be able to make it work.

I think that that is a good idea.. Also involve the manual conversion and things that are the main concern..

I'd hoped for info as well but we can add that later.
If you guys just want to build a sticky thread of useful links to other threads and external web pages it would be really useful and I'd be 100 percent behind it.
Found this site that someone already started.... along the same lines...
