Is this possible? I am referring to the 6-disc indash CD stacker with the 'Premium Audio' label on the front - the one the KL Verada and above.

The way which produces the best end result. :P

lol ok, I don't think you will like so ill post it all.
Cheapest way to do is to buy an amp that has high level inputs. Most amps will. This will give you 4 channels to work with. Essentually what you are doing is turing your high level speaker wire into higher power. Problem has to do with the level, you do not get much control over it. Also noise induction can be an issue.
Next option is for some high to low level converters. Again what it does it turn your existing 4 channel speaker wire into 2 set of RCA. This will mean that you again will have 4channels to work with from an amp. Good thing about this is that they convert your high level outputs into about 8v RCA. That will mean you will need a good quality amp to take advantage of this as recently when doing this we had problems with the amps maxing out to early because of the high voltage even with variable control. These cost about $15-30 for a 2 channel converter, obviously you will need 2 of them.
Now with both of the above if you wish to run a 4channel amp plus a sub amp, just make sure you buy and amp that has output RCA so you do not have to split the signal although you can if you want to.
Now the best way...
It is similar to the above but as well as converting your high level outputs to low level, it also fixes the factory EQ. JL have the cleensweep, Audiocontrol have the three.1 and the DQL-7 ( I think ) and arguably the best Rockford Fosgate have the 3sixty.1 and .2. These will start at about $450 and finish at $1499. Ill post some stuff about the RF 3sixty in a sec.

Ok so wat makes the RF 3sixty different is the amount of easy tunabiliy it has. What it can do is take your factory deck, and through the use of a Palm, fix your EQ curve with 153 bands and 15 wide Q filters. You can also plug an AUX in and it has 3 pairs of RCA outputs so 5.1 sound is still possible. It also outputs at a more Amp friendly 5V.
You will also get as a user you get, 5 front, 4rear and 2 sub adjustable EQ Hz +/-10db. All Xover Hz are 12db/oct. That is from the 3sixty.1 RRP$499.
Now the 3sixty.2 takes it further... Basically what you are getting is a 31band EQ for the front and 10band EQ for the sub. You also get 24db / oct filters plus sub sonic fitlers. Time delay is also an option. Basically this unit allows to user to have a large say in how exactly you want your car to sound. These are about RRP$999.

arent the 3sixty.2 also able to be remotely accessed via a PDA or eqiv as well?

Yeah dude they both bluetooth to Palms via the OS V5.0 or higher ( PDA's ) that is how you have to set them up. I have not had any experience myself put it looks quite involved. Would love to have a crack. Especailly the .2 :D

bleh, may as well get a new headunit.
A single din one will look horrendously ugly.
A double din has 'come and steal me' written all over it - no detach face. :(

yeah ive read a few articles about them in a few magazines and the rap they give them is awesome, if i ever get a car with a built in dash style stereo (BA-BF falcon etc) id seriously look at one of these. But since i own a car that i can replace the deck i just did that lot easier quicker and looks smarter then the crappy OEM one i used to have.
my 2c is 3sixty.1 good features and a good price

Yeah I would only stick it in either:
*A car that was easy to break into for a fully factory look. You can hook an Ipod up to these so why would a theif want a factory CD player or god forbid a factory tape player ( which I have seen done in a Mirage ).
*Or yeah a factory intergrated system. A mate who just bought a Civic wants one so it look factory but his sound doesn't suffer. The problem with most factory decks is the roll off Hz to accommidate the crappy factory speakers. These units help fix this.
For the money I have seen the 3sixty.1 for about $400. Very similar to aftermarket headunits around price considering the 5V outputs. Depends of how "ugly" you think the single din units are.

I can not believe for $800 it only has 4 channel RCA out. Perhaps the JVC 7inch double din screen would be better. Even it is screams steal me. Does look good.
The KW-AVX800 has been down around $1200 from memory like last year...
