I've been considering getting some hertz gear, particularly the 165's split and coax.. They seem to be pretty good though, is most of the gear good quality for the price? Because I might even consider building most of the system with it.

Handle a fair bit of power, not my cup of tea anymore, mids can take a beating, but tweet isnt very natural. Good for what some people want eg getting loud.
Their 3 ways are much better though

A number of people on here have in particular the HSK165's splits. They are known for there abiltiy to really ram home the mid bass that they are designed for. Their tweeters are harsh, however they are not as has as the old Focals or the Boston equivalent. Don't worry about Tim, he a a big girl that hates heavy metal :P
The co-axial verisons are usually very similar to the split verisons minus the xovers and sometimes the better cone / tweeter. One thing with the Hertz gear is make sure you give them plenty of power, that 125WRMS rated power for the HSK165's is no lie. I got my bro a set in his Mirage and they are running off a Soundstream 2x 80WRMS and they seem like they want more punishment.

So.. In general it's pretty good quality, decent gear? How about the sub's, One of the 15's I saw at autobarn today really took a shine to me, it sounded pretty mean, but I dunno if it's gonna blow up on me or whatever, also, what's everyone's opinions on 15's just quickly, if you get a good one is it worth it?
Mr İharisma

Same kinda thing. There subs are not the loudest but they do sound very nice.
As long you amp the 15 from a decent amp and mind the volume you should not have a problem if you would like a bigger diameter woofer. Blowing them up is a result of stupidity.
Do you know if it was a ES / HX / HXS 15 that you saw? They sound nice and controlled in a sealed box, and only require a small one in comparison to similar size woofers.

Nah, It was just sitting on the floor ^^, It had the hertz orange colour in rubber around the magnet if that helps though.. I'm looking at the HX380D atm though, and it sounds like it'd pump.. 700wrms..
And btw, i'm not after huge volumes, just sound quality
EDIT: I'm guessing that's what it was though, because the HXS has the black and it has SPL written on the speaker, the ones I saw didn't

Yeah that HX380 is not a bad woofer for the price, how much did they have is for sale for?
Perhaps you should team them up with some Audison amps to complete the Electromedia connection.... :D

It was 590, which they said was RRP, but if it's going to sound good, I'm willing to pay that.
Whats the difference between the 380D and the 380? Besides 3 bucks

id say one would be dual voice coil and the other single. Could be wrong but that would be my guess

Alright, so say I was to get the HSK (splits) and HCX (coax) 165's, and the HX 380D Sub, amp-wise, I would get a 4ch and run it with just 2 channels to the splits with at least 125wrms, then run the coax and tweeters to the HU (HU has 2 RCA) and get a 2ch and run it at one for the sub or get a mono, depending on the price, but make sure it's just on or just above 700wrms...
Right?..

no i would get a 4 channel to run the speakers and a mono block or 2channel amp to run the sub, i wouldnt use the deck at all usually not enough power to run those sort of speakers effectively not to mention your EQ's would be all over the shop

So does that mean I'd have to get a HU with 3 RCA's? or would I use the same signal for the coax and the splits?

you want 3xrca outs... any headunit worth its salt will have this

Dude if you are considering the HX380d, spend an extra $10 and get the HXS380. That SPL just means it has a higher power rating and increased efficiency. Remember you should get at least 10% off RRP. I had a play with a HXS300 for a month with only 600WRMS. I got that thing moving no problem. Love small sealed boxes and small to medium ported.
How much are you willing to spend on amps?
I tossed up between the HXS 380 and a Vibe Space 12 as a Boston G5 replacement. Stuck with the Boston G5 till the OZ Audio ME 12 came along... I bet no where up there has them though for you to audition...

Yeah that's gonna sting, i've been looking and it looks like I might have to pay close to a grand each amp =\.. How will I get 10% off RRP?.. That'd be cool but I don't see autobarn or whatever giving it to me cos I ask =[

With the HXS 380D the response range is smaller and doesn't go as low as the HX 380.. Is that a bad thing..
I think I might just stick with single voice coil anyways.. But I'm guessing you wouldn't need as powerful an amp for the SPL model right?
Is that lack of lower frequency worth the dual voice coils and 2ohm impedence?.. Just checking :), oh and the 1000W, dual voice coil, does that mean 1000ea or add up to 1000w?

check the specs id say that would be 1000w total so 500w per coil

Cabinets often fix that to some degree. i.e altering the size of your sub box. Remember that most music doesn't play around 30Hz. ( unless you listen to a symphony, the end tube in percussion plays at 18Hz :P )

It does have 101db efficiency but it still will need some power.

Yeah I will be easier to find an amp that will accept a 2ohm load and make big power. And yes each coil is rated at 500-1000WRMS ( in burst ).
Amps for this will not be a grand each. Cheap option are the Jaycar amps. 4x 100WRMS amp is $299 and the 1000WRMS @ 2ohm ( 1500WRMS @ 1ohm ) I think is $500 or $600.
Some Audiosystem amps would go really well with your set. For a grand each you can get:
F2-500, 1250WRMS x1 @ 2ohm $720
F4-380, 95WRMS x4 @ 4ohm $720.
As for your discount, they price match at Autobarn, if you look on there website I think it mentions it. You know that other places give a discount of at least 10% so tell them...

And BTW whatever happended to Jensen? They made some of the best quality gera in the early 80's and then it appears did a TEAC and went cheap?

Oooooh, thanks heaps for telling us bout those amp's, I just don't know what brands to look at, but yeah, Jaycar's good, and 299, that's awesome, that'll be my 4 channel then probably and, oh one more question about the dual voice coil, i don't exactly know what it means :P, does it mean you need two outputs on the amp to run it (ie. 2x500w 2ohm) or does it run off 1x1000w 2ohm?
Thanks heaps

Yeah Hertz is brought in by RM audio, the same company does Audison and Morel. See www.rmaudio.com
Dual coils mean that you have to coils wound onto the same former. It gives you higher power handling and more wiring options. For the HXS you are looking at with dual 2 ohm coils it means you can do the following:
Wire the coils in Parallel for a single 1ohm load ( +ive to +ive and vice versa then to amp )
Wire the coils in Series for a single 4ohm load ( +ive Coil 1 to - ive Coil 1, +ive to amp Coil 2, -ive to amp Coil 1 )
Leave them for 2 x 2ohm loads. You are probably best to wire them as above.
For the HX with the dual 4 ohm coils. Parallel will give you a 2 ohm load and series will give you a 8 ohm load. Hope that helps.

Yep =] so with that Jaycar 1500wrms 1ohm amp that would be enough to power the sub if I connected it in parallel?

Alright, freakin awesome, looks like I'm getting those two jaycar amps you mentioned, the hxs-380d, the hsk-165's, the hcx-165's, and a nice HU with 3 outputs, lookin at just over 2krrp, sounds good :)

Yeah source: $300-500
front: HSK-165 $379
rear: HCX-165 $239
sub: HXS 380 $600
speaker amp: Jaycar AA0426 4x 100WRMS $299
Thats is a min RRP of $1817.
sub amp: Now there are actually 3 choices here:
1. Jaycar AA0460, 1kWRMS x1 @ 1ohm. $399
2. Focal 1.800, 800WRMS x1 @ 1ohm. $699
3. Jaycar AA0429, 1.5kWRMS x1 @ 1ohm. $699
Make sure you factor in Sound Deadening and wiring as well. No point having good gear and making it sound like crap. Don't be surprised if it almost costs $3k by the time you are done :D
