So my aerial snapped on my TR wagon 1996. And I thought it would be easy to change like it was in my last car. It wasnt.

All was rolling fantasticly until I tied some string to the end so I had a path for the new wire to run through after I'd removed the old wire. However the wire was stuck somewhere, and that was the start of my problems.

So I got under the dash to sort out where the hold up was. And after a while I did but when I did I pulled at the wrong end accidentally and lost the wire at the top, so there goes the string idea. . .

So somehow I'll need to feed the wire back through the vehicle all the way from the roof to the CD player and so far it isnt friendly at all and keeps getting caught on something in the side.

I need some tips of how to get over this the easiest way, I know it probably wont be easy but anything to make it not so annoying will help.

I'm giving up for now, Ive had it. :D

Cheers.

Don't know if this will assist or you have tried it. I copied the following information from the KR-KS Workshop Manual. Where it reads Refer to Group 52- it is referring to Grouped pages in the manual beginning with 52, (e.g. 52-1, 52-5)

ANTENNA
Removal
(1) Remove the right hand cowl side trim and right
hand scuff plate, refer Group 52.
(2) Remove the floor console, refer Group 52.
(3) Lift up the carpet sufficiently to gain access to
the antenna cable securing tape and remove the tape.
(4) Remove the antenna retaining screws.
(5) Withdraw the antenna and cable from the pillar.

NOTE: Tapping a suitable length of electrical wire:
to the old cable before removal will facilitate
fitment of the new antenna and cable.

Mate why are you replacing the wire for?? If you just snapped the aerial all you need is a replacement mast, which takes a few minutes and quite cheap. I have already posted about this, but you can get a aerpro replacement mast for $30, and make it fit perfect VERY easily as I did for my car. If you want more info let me know.

Cheers,

Ollie

Probably shouldve posted that.

Went to wrecker and super cheap auto about it and for some reason the mast wouldnt unscrew properly. Neither could figure the problem but it just wouldnt unscrew which is why I had to start from scratch according to the wrecker and then myself when it simply wouldnt come off so off I trooped to super cheap where I though Id have one last shot at someones knowledge but it couldnt be worked. The main problem was an obstruction 3/4 of the way down. Im not sure what its hitting but it wont let past.

I may have simply ****ed up but its with the assistance of so called professionals who said I needed the go from scratch. :doubt:

Probably not very helpful, but have you tried something like fencing wire to lead the way? Might be able to force it through a bit better?

But yeah, good to know that apparently you can just replace the mast without the removing the whole lot, I should replace mine as it's never been able to fully retract (last section won't go in), so I've never been able to go through a drive-through carwash (not that I really trust them to do the job...)

Do you mean when you are trying to rip out the old mast? I had this problem also, after taking the nut on the top off, I think the motor just holds the plastic cogged cable, and I was pulling pretty much as hard as I could, that the back of the car was just boucing on its suspension from pulling on the antenna. I thought it obviosuly wasnt made to come off and tried to take it out from the inside (the whoel thing), but seemed even harder. I then went back to the outside and with all my frustration managed to rip the old mast out.

Just have plenty of weet bix and give it some muscle, its broken anyway so dont worry about braking it.

Just to clear up; Ollie, you have a power antenna I assume? Where is this located? The non-power ones, which I have and I assume phoenix5 has, are located on the roof above the passenger door. From what you've just described, sounds like yours is like the 3rd-gens, at the rear on the body near the tailgate?
If so, might be a completely different kettle of fish.

yep Ollies would be on the back of the car and not above the drivers door.....

Yup mine is manual and on the roof but on the drivers side, not passenger side. I have now ruined it in frustration anyway. :doubt: Since it snapped right at the base there was no leverage anyway to grab and with it stuck just wouldnt come out and no real way to give it a good heave ho.

I've tried everything but. It's not a bad idea and worth a shot for sure.

What a bloody hassle for a pissy little aerial. lol

Naa ended up doing it today.

I just had a snapped piece from an old earthing tube I assume it was, old and perished, holding the whole lot up when trying to place it down. It took a bit to wedge to out but I did as it wasnt that far down surprisingly considering the force it been putting on it, I dont know how I missed it before.() and all flowed smoothly with the new earth and wiring inside. I assume it has happened before to this car because the "male" end of the old aerial had snapped into the CD player and whoever did it just tried to stick a piece of aerial wire in there which explains why my radio reception was never crash hot, not that it bothered me but glad to pick up Melbourne radio stations again(Taswegian here!).

Frustrating but good learning experience about wiring and not losing your cool with cars or you miss obvious things :bowrofl:.

So dont be worried about. Was a cinch after I worked out what the blockage was. Very pleased.

All is good. Thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions.
