Interesting thought. I guess it might look OK. I reckon black on a white car would be the go. But I gotta say -being a child of the 60's/70's, when I think vinyl roof I automatically think Centura, Valiant VIP, XA Falcon and other...um...stylistically challenged cars :)

I have seen a vinyl roof on an AU Fairlane. I reckon that suited the car, it was black on black however..

Hey don't be knocking the Centura, was my first car complete with black vinyl roof, rally pak stripes and charger style slotted wheels.
Boy did that 245 Hemi go, and I don't know what people mean by they didnt handle, rack and pinion steering standard, all I did was beef up the shockers and rear springs, it was great.
As for the vinyl roof, a chammi after every wash, monthly armour all of the roof. No probs.
The success of your project will lie with the quality of the trim used between the roof and the apinted section. Assuming you've got factory originals, shoouldnt be a prob.

The Valiant VIP is a Classic, long wheel base without increasing the actual lenght of the car. One of the First if not the first with intergrated A/C and those torsion bars steered all by themselves.

I'm not confident the vinyl roof would look good. The third gen C pillar doesn't have a seam where it joins the rest of the chassis, which would make the vinyl transition look awkward as it doesn't follow the conventions of the car...

Surely someone can photoshop the idea to see what it would look like.

You know why the VIP had a vinyl roof? It was because they extended the cars wheelbase by cutting and shutting and the vinyl hid the join. Quality stuff! Chrysler got a LWB car for minimal outlay.

So why didn't they Vinyl the rear Doors then?
The VIP also had a smaller rear window the surrounds of which was all vinyl as well.

Im talking VF and VG. They ran the same rear doors as the regular sedan. The VE VIP had the std Valiant wheelbase.

And then there was the ultimate vinyl cover up - the 1969 and 70 Plymouth Road Runner. This was the original "Winged Warrior" designed to blitz NASCAR racing (which it and the Dodge Daytona duly did and were single handedly responsible for banning of any aero devices in NASCAR from that point on). Anyways, to get the aero to work on the 1meter tall rear wing they produced standard shells on the production line, and where the rear window went they fitted a 300mm wide steel sleeve to change the angle of the rear window, then fitted the window into that. So then they were left with a bloody great seam all round the window. Solution? Fit every Road Runner with a vinyl roof to cover it up....

Vinyl looks porn as! I had a '76 Escort Ghia, white with black vinyl roof, woodgrain dash and buckets of chrome! I'd like to see a 3rd gen done up this this way, verada with vinyl roof, whitewall tyres, chrome everywhere... would look spiffy I reckon. But thats just my opinion.

The rear doors were longer, unlike Ford with it's Fairlane Chrysler didn't add extra to the panel betwen the doors and rear wheel arch.
I owned a VE VIP 273 V8 and a LWB VG VIP 318 V8.
The whale like CH/J/K Chrysler had the extra sheet metal between the rear doors and wheel arches though.

I don't think that would matter. As long as the trim, normally chrome aligns with the trim on the bottom of the rear door glass it should look fine.
The Centura was another car with a huge C pillar area, but it worked because of the trim used, being level with the rear door window/door area.

would be interesting to see a magna with a vynle roof...
would prolly have to choose the colour of the vynle very well - as that will be a big part (obv) of the final look.
surely though... the same would happen like it has on cars of years gone by... of the roof starting to rust away under the vynle...?
ultimatly, i dont think a vynle roof would really suit a magna - but it depends in how its applied to the car...

For starters you do not need to cover a seam to use a vinyl roof.
Another clasic is the Landau, ford used a smaller window, spotted a bit sheet in and covered it. Rust city lol

You are spot on Tessa, i had my info wrong. I was under the impression that the VE, F and G had the same rear doors on the VIP. But they were longer on the VF and VG to go with the longer wheelbase.
