Sup guys.

Before I even start the rest of this post, I would just like to give my boundless thanks to Benjames for his expertise, materials, time, hard work, fibreglass resin skills, ingenuity, willingness to lend me his car and most of all his enthusiasm to do this install with me... Thanks mate, your generosity means the world to me.

Basically the deal here was to squeeze the following into my new '02 TJ Exec (Series 2)
- Eclipse CD4000 Head Unit
- Focal Polyglass 165-V3E Three-way component speakers
- Coustic 600SE 600W 2 Channel Amplifier
- Schneider 2400W Digital 2 Channel Amplifier (No idea what the model is, didn't look)
- 2 x JBL GT3-15 15" Subwoofer
- 32sqft of Dynamat Extreme

To put it quite simply, this install plays incredibly loud and clear till about 70-75 on the Eclipse head unit, then the amp is pushing out way too much power for what the speakers are built to handle. I haven't owned a system with such clarity and loudness ever.

The head unit install was painless and relatively easy to do, for Ben haha. I did other things like size up the doors for the effort that would be to place two speakers in the hole that originally housed one. I also cooked up some mean fuse holders and stuff, 100A ANL Fuse and some double insulated, high strand count aviation 3-4ga cable.

Saturday we started the assault on the whole car, seats were taken out to run the wires, power and RCA run on the same side, defeating the myth that doing so produces a whine through the speakers. Bam, mythbusters eat your heart out. I stripped the boot out while Ben set out on deadening and readying the passenger door for the install.

Ran into a minor hiccup when we stabbed a trim clip straight through the 4" driver's cone... We were pretty much stunned, but managed to make it as good as new with fibreglass resin. Cone doesn't distort and retains clarity at high load.

Basically due to the two speakers filling up the hole, the grille is far too small so the 4" was elected to sit angled up facing out of the grille, with the 6" driver on top, with roughly 1/4 of its cone area actually visible through the grille hole. The 4" driver handles a higher frequency of sound so it was more viable to give it the preferential spot rather than the lower frequency handling 6". Tweeters (TM-47) were mounted in Verada tweeter delta sails with some gap filler. Crossovers mounted in the access hole underneath where the trim bolts onto the door.

Door is essentially fully sound deadened with a good sheet and a half of Dynamat Extreme. Double thickness in areas that required it, behind the 6" driver and around both speakers. Both doors were given this treatment and sound incredibly solid, no panel or lock rod vibration noticeable.

I stripped out the boot and gave it a bit of a clean with pure alcohol (which might I note, almost got me drunk as I took a huge whiff accidentally after we sprayed a bit in there) and started laying the deadener. I lost track of how many sheets I used but I think it was about 4. Trunk lid deadened too, including below the spoiler which was an absolute bastard to get to. I cut the hell out of my hands with the god forsaken deadener sheets and their sharp edges.

I then knocked up some MDF amplifier mounts, picking out three mount points (two on the floor of the boot near the walls and the top bolt/nut holding in the tail light to secure it. Solid as a rock.

After running the cables and such, amps were wired up via distribution block and some cable we had lying around. Amps were positioned with their controls facing up for ease of tuning, worked out very very well. Carpet back in it was time to jam the enormous sub box into the boot. Let me just say this thing is a monstrosity, it's a great design, however the size is just... holy crap. Safe to say I don't have a boot any more. This will change later.

Unfortunately before I could see the carpet and subs and even the drivers side door be completed I had to rush off to get to the Calendar Launch Cruise. Ben lent me his car so I trotted on off to Cluden to meet up with the boys and girls of Townsville Division. Had a good yarn and off to Domain Central for some photos! Ben joined up with us again to demonstrate the literally destructive power of the beast we had just created. This thing is loud... Really, really loud. Like, on par with Ben's twin Boston Z6 front stage (two 6" drivers in each front door).

That's pretty much it, it looks stock from the inside, stock from the outside but oh my GOD can it hammer. Very very very happy with it. Ben, thank you again. Tim, kudos to you for the Schneider amp! She pumps :) Can't wait to hook this thing up to the termlab to give it a good burp. It's been tuned roughly at the moment but still sounds formidable, subs despite their size don't provide a boomy rear fill, very good control for them and compliment the front stage nicely.

Pictures will come tomorrow when I'm not so freaking tired, stay tuned kids.

Tee hee!! That's a pre-hole photo lol

I'm soooooo sorry I did the noob thing and managed to put a hole through the secksy Focals... Sounds fricken awesome though.. I was VERY suprised to hear how good they sounded.

Just goes to show that sometimes ya can't judge how good a speaker is by how much you paid for it... I tried playing my Bostons up on the way home... They just don't sound that loud anymore...

Have ya rattled any bolts loose with those subs yet??

I just spent a night impressing a lady friend with my sound system, vibrations please the ladies :P :bowrofl: Those subs can hammer with the gains set to where they are now, sends a great deal of vibration through the cabin rather equally, would easily push out 135dB minimum... Once they are set right though (tune for boom) 146dB plus easily.

I'm really keeping you guys hanging here!! Had no time as the pictures for the Townsville cruise sorta took precedence so maybe tomorrow afternoon when I finish work... Giggity giggity.

You should sit the ladies on the boot and send out a lowish ( 30-40Hz ) sine. They seem to like that for some reason.

I would be happy cracking 140 on termilab with that set up but don't be disappointed if it is in the high 130's. 145 is a very hard mark to crack.

Still waiting on some pictures.....

Probably on the other side of the box, there's enough for two corpses if you chop them up ;)

It's incredibly impractical at the moment which is a tad annoying, but like I said, Benjames and I have some aces, 18mm MDF, glue, screws, carpet, perspex and dacron up our sleaves... Stay tuned for that one :P

6 inch hole was left, door looks stock from the outside. 4 inch on the bottom angled slightly upward and 1/3 of the 6 inch cone is visible through the grille hole.

Dude if your gunna spend that much look into the OZ Audio 380CS RRP$1289 or the Morel Elate 9 3-Way RRP$1263. If I had the money I would get the Hertz Mille MLK 3, Ribbon mid :D but at RRP$2846, they are a bit outta the price range since I got a house :doubt:

Just some food for thought...

The current Focal 165VR3s are made in CHINA... The previous 3 way series (which Lucifer has) were the last of the polyglass series components made in France.

It would be very interesting to do a side by side comparison, to see if the newer components (which are actually cheaper than the older ones) were still just as good as the older series, which were made by the very same craftsmen that now only make the K2 and Beryllium series components.

Incidently, the TNB tweeters are around $40 cheaper than the TN47 tweeters if bought seperately... I don't know if this alone is indicative of quality or not...

"There are many eyes watching the changing face of Focal at the moment. It has evolved from the smaller exotic speaker genre, into a larger 'market driven' player within the realm of mainstream audio brand names. This means that it has had to become more competitive, relying on volume sales with less profit margin."

On opening their "Over-seas division", prospective Focal-brand buyers (and suppliers) were promised that the China based company would continue the tradition of producing the highest standard of quailty, which Focal had built it's reputation on.
Since then, the Access line and the Polyglass line have been produced within the China factory,....{with} the evolution of the TNA and TNB tweeters, utilizing cheaper parts with less construction time being the main aim. This was considered by many as being a major change to the quality of the entry and mid-levels lines of Focal's range........ {Added to this}, the polyglass components have had a revision on their crossover networks, utilizing the same internal components within a cheaper "slim line" casing.
