View Full Version : Headunit will not illuminate?

Hi everyone

I am reinstalling my old Eurovox headunit into my car. It's the one from the KE to KH double din with separate CD changer.

Whilst it is working fine and the LCD screen lights up with the radio stations etc, the buttons will not illuminate when I switch on the lights. Also, the dimmer controller dial near the intrument cluster doesn't work anymore. When I switch on the lights, the dash is at the brightest setting and cannot be adjusted.

I sent an email to Eurovox and this was their reply and a copy of the wiring diagram they sent me.

Hi Billy, I have attached a slightly different wiring chart, which I hope will be helpful.

Please note I have found in the past that the Mitsubishi units require both:- the (Eurovox) Orange wire connected to the (Mitsub) Green/White lighting supply wire, and also the (Eurovox) Purple wire connecting to Ground (Earth wire) on the vehicle. This wiring completes a circuit loop and should enable the lights to switch on when the car’s display lights are turned on.

The reasoning I believe, is Mitsubishi wanted the option of controlling the light intensity, by adding a user adjustable dash dial ‘DIMMER CONTROL’ , to ground, after the radio circuit (i.e. between the lamps and ground). This differs from the conventional pre-circuit Dimmers i.e. in Holden’s etc

I have connected the wires exactly as per the guide and their email.

Can anybody assist with what the problem might be please?

Thanks :)

I've just realised I'm taking advice on how to wire my headunit up to use the auto dimmer from a guy having even bigger issues! :bowrofl:

If its a factory headunit, why not go down the wreckers, cut off an old loom to match your headunit and match the wires, since they'll match up by colour, that should effectively set it back up exactly as it was out of the factory, which should get those lights functioning.

So the instrument cluster dimmer is linked to the head unit?? Because I put in a better headunit when I got my car, and after that the instrument dimmer wouldn't work!

Perhaps it's a similar setup to the blinkers, which don't work if the hazard light button isn't connected?

yeah maybe its a loop? get a mitsubishi wiring diagram, and see what each of the wires do. do you have any wires left over that are not connected to the h/u?

Well the only wires from the Mitsu loom left after connecting the power, accessories and speaks are the green/white wire for the the dimmer and a black/yellow wire. From the Eurovox there is an orange wire that should connect to the green/white wire and a purple wire which the Eurovox person said should be grounded. But no work and I have tried all possible combinations. Yesterday I had another muck around and connected the black/yellow wire to ground and it actually makes the dash light up brighter which is handy. But yeah, I think I might have to take a trip to the wreckers and just cut a loom/harness from a Magna because it's got me stumped and I have already gone through two packets of fuses.

Well I mananged to get the buttons backlit but only after a visit to a wreckers to cut a wiring harness from another Magna. Found a 2001 Exec with the stereo gone but the plug still there. Jackpot. :)
