i was just wondering [as a friend asked me]if the clear is resprayed on a car can you add pearl pigment to it or is it the actual colour that the pearl as to be added so if there is any spray painters out there let me know cheers
I'm not a painter but I know you can do it, if the paint you have is good it goes on over the top.( after prep etc.)

Yep, it's all in the clearcoat from my understanding.
Found this guy on ebay had some pretty good prices, and his website has quite a bit of info on how to apply, mix, etc etc; http://www.paintwithpearl.com/
Though I think we then found a guy on the Gold Coast that had pearl even cheaper; haven't pursued it yet though. Can't remember the details, don't even think I took them down, pretty sure we just did a google search limited to Aus results.

the main bit with spraying a pearl coat is you just need to ensure to get very even coverage to avoid different light reactions. I did a pearl spray on my nephews commodore very easy to do as long as you have some good equipment on hand. I also recommend the age old way of slow and steady. ie lots of lighter coats instead of just slapping it on thick and fast.

the pearl is not put in the clear unless its an actual candy pigment. basically there are 3 ways of doing it. 1. single layermetalic/pearl or COB(clear over base) - add pearl tinter to the basecoat metallic(ie sable black has a blue green pearl in its formula) and clear over the top. 2. 3 Layers - paint the desired basecoat colour and then paint a pearl over the top, followed by the clear. this is how most factory pearl whites are done(white base then white pearl over the top). this is tougher to paint than a single layer metallic/pearl as its important to put the pearl on evenly(called a pattern coat). I'm sure everyone has seen a home job where the pearl colour looks mottley or has bands from the spray strokes.
3. Candy - first a base color goes down then a transparent candy colour gets applied over the top(sometimes a candy pigment added to clear and sometimes a candy colour applied like base coat), followed by the clear. this is the toughest to do as you need to get the candy coat on perfectly even or where there is more paint it will change the color on the car. imagine looking at a silver car through red celofane, if the candy is not put on properly then where there is excess paint will be like looking through multiple sheets of celofane at that spot only. this is the reason why candy paint jobs are so expensive and are usually reserved for show/weekend cars.
