View Full Version : Erratic central locking system
My central locking seems to unlock/lock by itself randomly these few days on the TJ magna. Anyone has similar problems before? Last time I had the same problem, they adjusted the bonnet switch. What is that? Any idea if this can be fixed by an end-user?

i think its more if you unlock and dont open a door within 30 seconds itl relock itself - as thats what mine does
when you saw randomly locking / unlocking itself, do you mean you push unlock and it unlocks then will lock again?
or more at times when your not near the car itl unlock by itself?
when you want the car to lock / unlock, does it do it when you want it to?

Yep, that's what it does. If it waited for the key to be in the ignition I'd have locked my keys in the car more than once!

it only relocks if the doors aren't open:D

thats why you see salesmen at caryards open and close a door after they unlock their cars.. so they stay unlocked for the day..
I had a tribute randomly lock itself even with the keys in the ignition when i had it at work detailing it.. luckily the windows were all down 99% of the time..
BUT! that 1% of the time - just as it was about to leave, i shut the last door with the windows up and when i went back to get in it 5 mins later - all locked up with BOTH sets of keys on the one ring sitting on the passenger seat..
car ended up sitting in the middle of my workshop for 5 days before a key blank and a key number came from mazda - royal PITA!
Turns out it had an electrical fault.. maybe yours could be similar?
is it locking and unlocking itself by itself without the remote around?

My brother's KE had this exact problem, which turned out to be an electrical contact in the driver's door lock. It was covered in oxidation, which was messing with the signal.

seems like a flaw, I know many others will only lock if their doors are closed. You cant actually lock when doors are open. Unless your central lock was being redone maybe.

mine was locking even though i opened the door.
but my prob was a faulty drivers door open/close sensor. the little button like thing that senses and open or closed door.
$40 to fix it when i put it in for service.
i dunno whether thats your problem though

Sounds like an aftermarket system to me, using the factory remotes. None of the factory Mitsubishi keyless entry systems let you lock the car with the doors open. I only know of cheap aftermarket alarms that do this.
The random locking/unlocking will have something to do with either a corroded connection, or the computer is buggered and its reacting to every remote signal in range.
The random locking/unlocking problem I have is not related to the 30sec auto relock function.
I have this problem back in 2004. That time, not only the locking system gone erratic, but the alarm system also go crazy. It would beep when it randomly unlock. I took it to Mitsu service and the invoice say it has adjused the bonnet switch and it seems to fix the problem till now.
This time round, so far only the locking system plays up. Also at one time, when I try to lock with the remote (factory remote), it just blink lights but does not lock. Need to press twice to get it locked. I haven't dared to drive it for days now in case I am forced to park on the street unlocked or worst, with the alarm going crazy like last time.
I have booked it with Mitsu service again but won't be in till next tuesday. I am just wondering if anyone can give some tips on what I could do as an end user to fix the problem.
Thanks so much.

can you lock it and unlock it using the key?
if you lock it with the key, will it automatically unlock itself?

I haven't touch the car since it played up. However, using key or remote gives same result with my last incident in 2004. It plays up randomly and unpredictably. Sometimes it locks well, other times, it seems to have its own mind.

mmm definatley a strange one then..
i was just going to suggest forget using the remote and just lock and unlock using the old fashioned key..
If mitsu cant fix it maybe try an auto electrician.. im still guessing its electrical fault related..

The invoice last time said they adjusted the bonnet switch. I am not exactly sure how this relates to the locking system. Do you know what/where it is? Is it something I can adjust?

Drivers side at the front, 2cm round rubber thing that presses down, its for the alarm. If it breaks contact the alarm should go off ie bonnets been opened.
The workshop called back just now and the car refused to be erratic when in workshop. Dammit!!! Now I have to pay hugh labour cost without any closer to resolve the problem.

that sucks..
and its always the way... will never play up when you want it to..
Hi guys, the erratic locking system seems to start playing up again. I was advised by last workshop visit to wait for the problem to become very serious before taking it back. So in the meantime, do you guys know what cause it?
If the problem do get serious, is there a way to disable central locking & alarm? I am worried the alarm will give me a huge fine if it gets out of control for me to stop it during the night...
Sigh... the alarm has gone crazy again.... :(

OK,
Interesting one to add to this, My TJ Advance, has been having some wierd issues with its locking system. Firstly the remotes have tiny range.
Then, mostly they dont work at all. I have done the coding thing many many times.
They only work for about a day or so. New batteries go in, same thing. New remotes with unbroken contacts, same story.
Lately though, after a fresh recoding session, the remotes have been doing crazy things to the car!
Firstly the unlock (green) button will unlock all doors on a single press.
Then, when lock is pressed, some of the time it will lock others it won't register (no blinking indicators). However, the green security light in the dash stays on until its unlocked again.
A couple of times I have come out of the house to find the security light on and the doors unlocked too.
My thoughts are the BEM may be having a slow death. None of these problems have ever been in the KH.
Is there some sort of fault code that needs to be cleared? Im sure its the BEM as the key operates all the locks just fine (save for the random unlocking issue)
Any thoughts?
I think my issue has been resolved. It was found some water got into the remote and the internal buttons kinda stuck into position and triggered the unlock/lock sequence and/or the panic alarm. I never know how water gets into the remote. So now, I just use the key to access the car and the problem seems to disappear.
I also have a issue with my central locking in my TH advance .. when I lock with the remote it locks but the security warning light on the dash stays on for a while, then when you UNlock with the button the alarm sounds & I have to press the button again to stop it from sounding (security warning light on dash comes on again) Been using the Key coz i cant work it out, but I really want to start using the fob to lock/unlock

Yeah, my remotes are back to the usual non-functional status. So back to the key for me too.
