I have a TJ magna with the engine pipe rattle, Mitsubishi has told me the deal with the spot welded baffle which breaks loose inside the pipe behind the engine and rattles, they quoted me something like $700 to replace the pipe but said that it may break again.

I've done lots of searches and read about the issues with this header pipe baffle breaking loose and wondered if the TL series had an improved internal pipe weld because it seems to be a TJ problem and I guess it would also depend whether or not the TL series engine pipe fits a Tj.

Some people replace the complete system with a header/extractor set up but I don't really want to do that unless I really have to, but my car sounds like a tinny POS at the moment which is a real pity because they are such a sweet sounding engine.
We put man on the moon in 1969 surely an internal exhaust rattle can be fixed permanently?
Can't a competent exhaust mechanic cut the offending piece of metal out and re-weld the pipe? (Like an appendix operation)

Yes a competent exhaust fitter should be able to fix the problem for $100 or so....

Like i can replace the front section for $500 using stainless.. less than original replacement.

Cheers guys, I'll have a look for a good exhaust fitter in Adelaide, I took it to one but they wanted to fit a stainless steel full exhaust "to go with the sexy new wheels" they said, but I'll try and find one prepeared to fix the problem by welding, any good places you can suggest?

hey mate i just went to the wreckers and got a 2nd handy for $17 works a treat, altho there is no way of testing it before hand....

I cheaped out but i hear they can be fixed for around $100ish if its not too severe

Best of luck

Wow, 17 bucks was that including a slab of beer? Good price for an engine pipe, the wreckers I spoke to wanted about $150 and no guarantee that it does not rattle as well.

As far as I understand the troublesome pipe is up behind the engine and the loose baffle is up the top near the bend, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
