View Full Version : TP front tyre wear
So is it normal for the front tyres on a TP to wear faster on the inside? It needs 2 new front tyres, and am wondering is it worth getting a wheel alignment at the same time. I just replaced the chains, repaired hole in timing cover, new valve stem seals, she's purring now, worth the effort, cos its only done 150,000 k.

My front right side wheel wears tyres faster on the inside than my left. main reason being due to being side swiped many yrs ago and the camber never really getting fixed :doubt:
Will be soon.
Have a mech look at it, could simply be worn control arm rubbers and its sagging slightly.
BTW, I have a hole in my mu11s timing cover, right on the corner where the water channel ends, so when the car runs it gushes water thru there., but i bought it like that as i only really needed the body.

Tyres wearing on the inside, probably means that the wheels are toeing out.
I.e. the front of the wheels are farther apart than the rears.
Put your hands flat together pointing at the computer screen.
Move your fingertips apart.
Then mimic your hands moving away from you.
This is how the inside edges wear out first. Also you should see the outside edges of the tyre pattern blocks have been wiped, or feather edged, towards the rear of the car.
New tyres = Wheel alignment.

Seems like the forum's back up and running, had no luck getting on in the last coupla days.
Spud100, you're right get a wheel alignment regardless, but i was thinking that sort of wear pattern might be normal/unavoidable in front wheel drive, the wheels try to pull out. Car does a lot of highway driving.
PeteW, the timing cover blanks off an absolete water jacket port, where the water pump used to be for rear wheel drive cars. The cover is only a few mil thick and eventually corrodes through. Found that out on this site, luckily, becuase i was getting ready to junk the car, thought it had a cracked block from being cooked, you can't see anything, just coolant pissing out, its all well hidden behind the engine mount bracket.

the tyres should have been rotated and balance more often
wheel alignment, good front shocks and bushes being in good condition
should keep the tyre wear under controll
any problems after that you look at the rear shocks and bushes
Just signing off on this thread. New tyres and wheel alignment done -alignment was quite a bit out, and explained the inside tyre wear. She's cruising like a new car now, smooth as, 2500 rpm in overdive and I'm way over the speed limit. Just regained some respect for this old car.
