Thinking of buying a TR Magna, probably 91-94 model. Any tech problems i should know about??
Any info would be appreciated. Any why are they so cheap? $5,000 doesnt seem enough.

The mitsu magna has always suffered from a startling depreciation rate, so that price isn't abnormal at all. I paid $6700 for my manual with 120,000 on the clock. Depending on the klms and general condition of the car the price will vary. Check www.autotrader.com.au for a general idea of the TR TS magna prices.
I would avise you to try and find a manual transmission, purely as they would be cheaper to repair as opposed to an auto transmission. I would also suggest you get the V6, however depending on your tastes, you may want a 4. the TR is by all means a great car, and I'm sure Killbilly and others will b able to giver a better response than me. :D
Can you post up some details of the car you were thinking of buying? Or just thinking about TRs in general?

91-94 would be a TR model. Which is what I have.
I'd urge you to look for a V6 over the 4 cyl as it will be better off in the long run. They have equal fuel economy but the 6 is more powerful.
If you can, look for a manual, if not the auto's are good, but they did have some problems (Mind you, my old man owns a KR Verada and has never had a problem)
If you want a V6 manual, you'd be looking at 93-94. V6's only came out across the entire range in 93. Before that 91-92 models of Magnas were 4cyls and the Verada's were the only V6's.
Things to look out for on a TR, depending on kms, I'd assume most would have done well over 100,000kms. I'd look out for shock condition, bushes etc, make sure there's no rattles. All the general things, condition of belts etc. Make sure the clutch doesnt slip (if manual), check for any abnormal sounds when u change gears in the auto (have heard reports of this in older auto magnas). umm...Im sure Madmagna can think of a few more things.
Also look at TS's too, only cosmetic differences between them, they're practically the same car, might cost you a little more...but they generally have less km's and there's more of a chance of getting a V6 manual if you include TS's as well as TR's in your search.
Good hunting mate. check out www.carsales.com.au and www.carpoint.com.au to find them, I found mine on carsales.com.au

hey all. i'm also thinking about getting a tr/ts magna but i'm a gadget guy so i'd have to get at least an se model for the cruise and power windows. I've just found out about the verada's so i'll be checking them out as well.
MR6G72, the verada looks pretty sweet. bit out of my price range though. i'm probably looking at $6K max.
keep the tips flowing guys

If you are wanting any particular info, well I know every nut and bolt on these cars lol
Being in Melbourne I would be more than happy to have a look at one if you are looking at any particular car.
Engine, look for valve stem seal wear, general oil leaks and lash adjuster noise. Always see a car when the engine is cold, this way any rattles will be more evident.
Check suspension in general, also check for brake shudder as this is also an issue.
On the 4cyl check for timing chain noise, this will be worst when the engine is cole on first start, as Killbilly said try to get a 6 if you can.
Body, the only real rust areas around behind the tail lights.
With any second hand car there are bound to be one or two things that need doing, keep this in mind when negoriating a price.
