Hey guys,

Along with my DOHC conversion i was thinking of putting some additional gauges in my car. I will be installing them down where the ashtray and ciggie lighter is, as i dont need them.

I was thinking along the lines of oil pressure, voltage, and vacuum or afr.

What are your thoughts on these as i want them to be of use, not just for show. IE another tacho or water temp gauge when the car has one already.

Cheers,
Chris

i am going to remove the ashtray and surround completely and make a custom enclosure to go in there.

Oil temp and air/fuel ratio gauges are handy though not essential.

Oil Pressure would be my first priority.
Then maybe Volt/Amp, Oil Temp, etc...

Here's a couple of interesting Gauge Sites...
http://www.thehoffmangroup.com/aurora/
http://www.speco.com.au/gauges.html
http://www.aisat.com.au/vdoautomotive.html

You also got me interested in how many different types of gauges you can get.
Here's a quick list (there's probably more lol).
- Oil-Pressure
- Oil-Temperature
- Cylinder Head Temperature
- Exhaust Temperature / Pyrometer
- Voltmeter
- Ammeter (Amp)
- Fuel pressure
- Vacuum
- Boost
- Clock
- Fuel
- Coolant-Temperature
- Speedometer
- Tachometer
- Hourmeter (Operating time of engine)
and combination gauges...
- Speco have a Tacho with a shift light, Oil Pressure, Boost and Water Temp all in one.
- VDO have a Tachourmeter (Tachometer & Hourmeter in one)

Peronally, Oil pressure/temp... and Air/fuel would be what i'd use. If running boost then get Vac/boost gauge aswell.

Oil pressure is the main one, if that goes say goodbye to a motor very quicly. And determines how healthy a motor is. low pressure is BADlol

have u thought about mounting them in the dash like the DARE YA car...could work if u dont have airbags :D

im not keen on that idea. I think it looks ricey. I remember seeing a SWB soft top pajero once that had a trio of ralliart gauges in the dash under the stez. If i see on of those, the gauges are mine.

Those DIN panel ralliart gauges are pretty pricey though, but would be the optimal way to go.

im currently wrecking a SWB gen 1 petrol turbo pajero lol!!!! but the gauges are mounted on the dash in the original housings.

air/fuel will only be usefull if you install a wideband o2 sensor as well. other than that it will just be for show, although it will let you know if your o2 sensor is stuffed. basically all it will do is go to rich when you boot it and lean when you back off. i have 1 of these and have used it in a few different cars. always does the same thing. i only put it in cause i like flashing lights, LOL.

i would still see water temp as a usefull gauge. now i'm not sure about magna fuel gauges, but i know in some other cars when they get to operating temp the gauge will stay there even if the temp goes up by 10 degrees, and it isn't till the thing is about to boil that it goes to hot, by which time half the damage is already done.

i wouldn't bother with vaccum much either, that is another one for the wank factor. although it will let you know if you ave a vaccum leak. but for that all you have to do is just hook it up for a min or 2 at idle every few months.

personally i would go 1 of the following combos:
water temp, oil temp
water temp, oil pressure
oil temp, oil pressure

and remember, if you are hooking up a water temp gauge make sure it is on the hot radiator pipe (the pipe that feeds coolant FROM the motor to the radiator) that way you get the temp that the engine is running at. if you put it on the cold pipe you aren't getting an indication of how hot the motor is running, just how well the radiator is cooling the coolant.

I've got 3 atm but will have 5. I'm in the middle of making a dash mount 3 of them similar to the 3000GT. I've got;
*Air/Fuel ratio
*Boost
*Oil Presure
*Oil Temp
*Water Temp

$470 plus shipping

buy the faceplate and hunt down some sweet gauges :)

anyone with awesome fibreglass/plastic moulding skills would be able to make up a gauge holder similar to what moparcm ralliart done but molded?

The guy selling em is a real top bloke too.
One of the mods on JustCommodores, lost his license for doing burnouts in a footy feild on a club cruise. Nice way to show respect to your club eh.

If its like the V6 TR, to put an oil pressure gauge in you might need an L bend adaptor to put the oil pressure sender unit in as theres les then an inch of clearance from the sump to the driveshft..

3rd gen oil filter is on the front of the engine, under the a/c comp.

I am going to make up my own gauge pod thingy. I want a double din touch screen h/u so that din panel is out of the q.

I will post progress pics of the gauge pod. I havent go anything for the DOHC motor yet. Its all top secret anyway, lol.

funny you should mention that because i do have those fibreglass/plastic moulding skillz

I started this on friday at work, going to be dash mounted above the trip computer. It'll be finished with carbon fibre and it will (should) look like an aftermarket option once im done. They're all angled toward the driver so each gauge faces the same way

ive been looking at the idea of some gauges too, oil pressure, oil temp and air/fuel mixture. but where do you connect the gauges too? and i heard that its not legal to have them

Screamin TE

i think it is illegal to have them higher than the steering wheel. Not 100% sure on that tho.

That looks good jase. What bran guages are they?

As i have said previously, mine will be mounted down where the ashtray used to be, but i will be modifying the console to follow the path of the dash, instead of the path that the ashtray followed.

Gearstick will be rotated so the dog leg faces the back of the car so that there is more space in front of it when in 1st, 3rd and 5th. If it looks as good in the flesh as it does in my head, it will be porn, and you all will want one!!:D

the gauges are DRiFT, pretty much the same as saber gauges but just a bit cheaper

bit of a tag on as opposed to making yet another thread.

But I was thinking of modifying my dash cluster to include my gauges, so where the clock and volt meter is, cut holes to size, remove connection requirements from backing plastic and mount the new gauges within behind the cover of the cluster but on the gauge backing,

Essentially replacing what was there with new gauges but retaining the cluster...

That legal?
