can anyone see a problem with the chain set up

the lower right hand guide is out and the chain runs across it on an angle
the straightens half way up the tensioner guide

I was not aware the balance shaft cogs were not interchangeable

I have a good selection of guides and chains and cogs

I dont think iit is wise to reverse the cog onto the problem guide

can anyone help identify that that guide lower left is the correct one for the TP

now the inner links of the new counter balance chains have been chewded out only on the inner edge facing outwards from the balance shaft cogs
edge (all shiny but the cogs show no abnormal wear)

as if not running straight the special bolt A came loose for the second time even with extra loctite (will clean out thread and degrease so its clean again )

dont know how to fix this one when the motor runs the chian noise doesnt go away

and the other intresting thing..is the timing chain for the cam slackens off at least two
links you can see the slop when the rocker cover is off
at TDC but after removing the timimg cover today all is in order

I cant see too well in the pics but make sure all the gears are the right way round.

When I opened one engine (that was a runner) one gear was backwards and was causining the cam chain to only run on one row of teeth.

They will go together with a sprocket backwards but they wont play the game properly. :)

I'm having the same problem where the timing chain has been "done" less than 5000kms ago, and it's rattling worse than before now. could this be the sprocket the wrong way round? could this mean that aI would have to, once again, replace chains/guides?

Certainly doesn't look right bud....

Could be..... could also be the little pin that goes in the side of the hydraulic plunger.

If it isnt in far enough the plunger can come out (very unusual)
If its in to far the plunger can stick and not put full tention on the chain. The fix for this is to rotate the plunger about 5 degrees each way on its shaft, this pushes the pin back out slightly and cures the stickiness.

yours being the TR the rachet on the timing cog should keep the tension
try a chain adjustment on the side plate of your timing cover

this is the 3rd time my engine has come out

on my TP there is no rachet tension on the pump
so I dont expect tension to be there on my timing chain
no wear on the guides
old fart
you are right about the oil pump guide it was out more and the timing cog chain had good tension
I pushed the tensioner in the oil pump back and it hasnt come out ...all that looks good im not concerned

its the balance shaft problem - not a tappet - rockers oil pump pressure good or other motor noise

I dont know how to fix the lower left hand guide the shape is below the chain
the shape doesnt fit look like it supports the chain as it runs clockwise
the balance chain shaft doesnt make contact with it until it is half way along
when it does the chain is on an angle

this is where the inner part of the timing chain must be chattering and shiny
(visable metal chunks are now seen off the links )

the two balance chain cogs are facing out with the dots and chains aligned where they should be

the noise is most noticable at idle to 1500 rpm

just before the balance chain oil pump cog then runs off line on the tensioner guide for about 5 mm -10 mm ....then lines up with the top balance shafy cog properly

just to get a straight edge one would think the balance shaft cog on the oil pump
has to be revesed to even come close to running true

this isnt right / balance shafts are in good condition no wear /oil pump is as new

not putting it togeather till I get something sorted

the chain noise can be heard houses away ... so most puzzling to me

Hang on, the two silent shaft gears are opposite to each other when installed, are you sure the oil pump drive gear is the right way round??

this motor at the moment doesnt have a chain tensioner 3

by the book TP motor is chain guide c ....which is the one fitted

we are getting closer
the cog on the oil pump is so far out (sprocket B)
the inner chain links only just runs on the outer edge of
both guides before and after the cog (sprocket B)

the mating mark and the coloured link are correct

I will look through all my counter shaft sprockets to find any difference

nope... no difference all the same

If you can put up with the small amount of vibration, get the balance shaft elimination kit in while its all apart.

looking at that diagrame of old farts

they use the same sprocket for both left and right shaft

so one has to be on the wrong way

the elimination kit is about $35

havent had the oil pump off

motors only done the 200,000 + a bit

Wanna buy a factory TP manual :D

the 2 smaller gears

1 goes 1 way the other is reversed..

the other thing ive seen done that helps with the chain noise is to put a washer under the spring in the tensioner to give the spring more force, putting more tension on the chain.

seen it done a few times after a few 1000 km still no noise

Wanna buy a factory TP manual :D

ha ha

why buy a factory manual ..... mine are both automatic

I sort of read pictures.... cant read writing

I have seen how thick those books are and heavy

going to swap chain guide 3 with a chain tensioner 3

as in your diagramme old fart

and turn oil pump balance sprocket over the other way

this motor ... when running quiet... will go into the wagon

turned the sprocket over

had to get another crank cog, single link chain, guides

got clearence and proper alignment now

used loctite 271

and now up for new sump and timing cover gaskets

was not able to fit chain tensioner 3 of a tr/ts motor
oil pump must be a lot different

thanks for your help ....everyone who posted
