Hey guys. Yes, i have done a search first but couldnt get much on this.

Is it possible to convert the 4 banger 2nd gen to the V6 without too much hassle?

Does it fit straight in? What do I need to change/modify?

Also, im assuming permits are necessary?

Just wondering if this was worth attempting, without spending too much.

All help appreaciated, cheers.

it would be cheaper to buy a V6

if you found a cheap v6 with all the parts that you can swap over, and did most/all of the work yourself. then yes it is worth is

also worth gettin a manual for the 6cyl aswell.

you can do this and the engine will fit straight in although you will need to weld in the passenger side engine mount. Also you will need to get a engineers cert.. Its up to you but if you are going to go ahead with it, do get the manual gearbox though as it will be alot faster and economical.. Everyone will say to get a gto engine but its really up to you..

and i'd throw a DOHC motor in too if you're going to the hassle

ouch.. sounds like a bit of a hassle. and not cheap either.:doubt:

how much would i be looking at for the manual conversion? ive heard of it done to a fair few second gens around. cuz yeah, i agree.. the manual would finish it off perfectly.

and as for this gto.. what engine is it? and houw much would it set me back?

just a front cut or a donor car 4 cylinder

the 4 cyl front discbrakes rotor are diff to the V6 (spline count)

the 4 cyl cv drive shafts and intrim shaft will be needed

the 4 cyl and 6cyl front wiring looms are different

under dash and engine bay

the engine mounts either swapped or modified

stuff already mentioned as above

Any ideas on the cost for the manual conversion?

No, i wouldn't have a clue how to do it myself.. What's the rough cost for all parts as well as the labour?

well if you pay someone then maby $2000ish for the v6 could be more but will be cheaper if you do it your self... Have a look at my thread on the v6 converison. i did it but im planning on having my car a long time..

think about how long you want to keep the car and do the math.. Otherwise maby sell and get a auto v6 do the conversion or search for a v6 manual..

Like everyone said, sell your car and buy a v6 instead. It would be cheaper. And if you're really really considering to swap engines make sure you throw in the GTO DOHC in.

So has anyone who has made the comments above actually done it??? stupid question I guess.

Yes I have done it, and no you would not need an engineers cert unless you told the transport authorities you changed the mount.

You can unpick the mount from a 6 and if done properly will never tell that it was placed onto the 4cyl body. As you are using the mount of the same model, different option car, you will have little trouble or questioning. Remember 3 of the 4 mounts are common.

The job is easy, you also need to change lower control arms as they are different, rotors are smaller, shafts etc. You would get all this in the donor car either way.

If you have a very good example of a 4 cyl, then you may have a worthwhile car to convert, if not then is better to get a rada or v6 TS.

In short, it is a very easy conversion, just some work involved.

If you have a look at the L/H inner guard it's completely different to the V6 , so it be a fair bit of work. Also you need to change the P/S and A/C hoses, the rotors are bigger on a V6 not smaller, the side mounts are different but the front and back are the same.As for the front suspension the bushes, lower control arms, stabilizer bar attaching points and rear bush clamp also differ. If it's a manual the hydraulic system also differs. The wheels are 14 inch on a 4cyl and 15inch v6.
So at the end of the day it's just not worth doing.

I was referring to the 4cyl rotors being smaller, as I have said, I have done the conversion. Have you?

As stated, if you have a good car, and a cheap donor car it is worth it.

Only 1 side mount is different, not both!

Power steer hoses etc all are in the donor car, I am not sure of what hydraulic parts you are talking about, if you are talking clutch system, well then that would be a given.

I have pull apart 2 4cyl TR sedans and 3 KR - TS and both side mounts differ between the 4cyl and v6's.I tried to replace the v6's with the 4cyl one's but they don't fit front and rear no problems.
Let common sense prevail it's not worth doing the conversion unless you need help.
