Had a problem recently, where if i cranked the headunit too high (say over 50/52), the headunit would reset... turn the volume down and all was good. Had me thinking blown speaker, so changed the EQ a lil bit to drop the bass, and to put more sound backwards (previously had it setup more at the front i think).
But now the funny thing is, i can crank it again! can put it up to 60 no problems (dont go higher, no need and bad distortion!)
Stereo is stock besides the headunit, and wiring was done by me, wasnt soldered, but eleccy taped.
So could it still be a speaker on the way out, or more likely the wiring?

Wiring for sure, that's ****ing dodgy dude lol Sounds like a wire's partially got loose and cutting sick all over the terminal, any chance you find it'll cut driving over railway tracks or bumpy roads?

nah was just random :( seemed to happen more in the hot weather actually (i think)
and only did the dodgy coz it was meant as a temp install lol wiring was still done pretty good, even if it wasnt soldered :)
My guess would be a lose contact on one of the speakers, or the headunit is running out of power from the battery. Checked the alternator lately?

Checked the alternator lately?
cant say that i have lol
why would it return back to normal tho?
When you say reset, do you mean losing all the radio presets, eq settings, clock etc? or something else?
If its losing those settings I'd be looking straight into whats powering the headunit, because its losing power somewhere when its asking for a ****load of it. Usually, the alternator would be one of the first suspects, has the car felt like its taken a bit longer than usual to kick over lately? Could be another sign.

nah hasnt taken extra long
and by reset, no has kept all its settings (sorry for the mis-info there), but by reset i mean its as if you killed the ignition, then re-started it again (ie the unit shuts down the immediately starts back up). can be in radio mode, or CD.
will re-check the wiring when i get the chance.
So most likely not a speaker doing this sort of thing?

I've seen speakers causing head units to restart themselves, dodgy stock Lancer speakers were causing my mate's stocko head unit to reset before I gave them a bit of encouragement not to.

Mine's been doing that too in my 02 KJ Verada. Basically cutting out altogether, including the display & then restarting where it left off - no problems with loss of pre-sets, tuning, CD position etc.
I took it to an audio installer yesterday & he reckons it's the amplifier chip failing. It's gone away on test to some place in Melbourne that apparently deals with repairs to most of the main manufacturer branded units. Subject to the quote, I'll get it fixed as the sound's good and it's a neat installation in the console.

I had similar problem mate, mine was replaced under warranty. (Though it was within 30 days of purchase)

does it only happen when the car is switched off? because my mate has the exact same problem with his but it only happens when the car is switched off looking to see what the problem is im thinking the ground.

nope happened when the car was running.
hasnt happened since, so i'll keep an eye on it :) if it happens after puttin the new speakers in, then it'll probably put it down to the deck.
deck has the 3yr warranty, and atleast 1yr is left on it thankfully :) i love that 3yr option with eclipse decks!
