View Full Version : Recently bought car - not original parts...

Hey everyone, first post, so take it easy! I just bought my first car (TR Magna 1993), privately off someone (carsales.com.au) and recently, took the car in for a service. It was then that I discovered that most of the parts are no longer original and may have been mix and matched from other Magnas (ie. car yard). The mechanic told me to offload it ASAP (for as cheap as possible) but I've just spent so much money on buying/fixing it that I don't just want to dump it to whoever.

The car seems to drive ok so I was just wondering whether its safe to drive a car whose parts aren't original. Would the car just break down by itself? That's what I'm scared off. I'm a complete dumbass in regards to cars, as you can tell! Hope you guys can help.

Cheers, Sam

do you know what parts arent original?
sounds pretty dodgy for a mechanic to be telling you that...
o yeah, welcome to the club:D

What do you mean by non-original parts? Normally parts are replaced as they wear out, not exactly dodgy to have bits and pieces replaced.

my car is made up from all 3 of the first generation, engine from 1, gbox from another, panels from another, etc etc.

nothing wrong with that, any car of that age is the same.

only rarely do you find a factory original, even my sedan now has an aftermarket bumper from its 100% orig setup

Half of us here have deliberately made our cars non-original; replacing bits with those that came out on higher-spec vehicles, or with bits that are more unique.

Or when bits wear out, replacing them with parts from wreckers that are in better condition, rather than paying exhorbitant amounts for brand-new ($400+ for an analogue clock, anyone?)

As long as the bits are in good condition, then there's nothing to worry about. That said, surely it would have to be something pretty obvious for someone to pick up on the fact that a bit has been replaced?

As most have said above...

Welcome to the club

...and give us some more information about what parts have been replaced & how does your mechanic know (ie. different numbers (if engine), different colours, different model Magna/Verada, etc.). :D

Sounds pretty normal. Unless it's a cut and shut where two halfs of another car are welded together (as mentioned above) or it's got bits on it from another manufacturer (which i highly doubt).
Sounds like your mechanic is trying to scare you for no reason ROFL.
Let us know what those parts are

maybe the car has spice lids where the resonators were:P

:bowrofl: :bowrofl: :bowrofl:

but seriously, if you look at basically anyones car in this club they would have upgraded something. be that going from base model magna parts to verada/diamante parts or to upgraded perfromance parts like K&N air filters and aftermarket exhausts. that what modding cars is all about. What i would be concerend about is if the parts represent a downgrade. but in order to know that we need to know what parts he is talking about.

got any pics?

...What i would be concerend about is if the parts represent a downgrade. but in order to know that we need to know what parts he is talking about...Agreed, Downgrade or replaced parts that indicate serious/major accident repairs could be a concern. Maybe drop the car into a panel beater to see what they say.

kanglq,
More info please.
Come on mate, don't just leave us hanging on ONE Post! lol

Welcome to the club.

I am in Vic and work on many members cars, if you want to drop over for an opinion from someone who knows Magna's I am more than happy to have a look.

May be you have a mechanic scared of the unknown, ie Magna's?
