Hi everyone,
I got a TJ advance 01 model, with regular 4 speed auto (non-tiptronic). Without any warnings at all it just died on me today while driving. It just simply cut out. Car did not shake or any unsual sound whatsoever. It just felt like it was in neutral engine would simply revout & the car would not move at all. None of the gears work, reverse or any other when i try selecting L, 2 or 3. The engine makes the usual sound when i try to shift from neutral into drive (revs out slighly to generate power to shift the gear) but noting happens. Lights on instrument cluster do work and correspond with the gear i select.
I just wona know if my gearbox is gone and if so how much to fix it or get a new one, i even dont mind to convert it to manual ( i actualy prefer that), can anyone tell me a good place around Sydney?

what is the colour of your oil??? if it is black it is most likely the clutch packs have worn and you will need a complete replacement. this happened to my dad's KF not long back. No limp mode no forward or backward. oil was black. He got another box fitted from Mitsi dealer for $2000, Factory remanufactured with 40000km warranty.

Oil looked alright a little bit dark (its red natuarally right?) but not black. $2000 doesnt sound too bad, i wonder how much manual conversion will cost me.

haha...manual conversions...so many have asked lol. I'm not sure what the going rate of the conversion is these days but I dont think it's pretty.

Getting a replacement Auto isnt either, it can be very expensive, manual is probably cheaper but harder if you dont have an idea about cars.
"Rev's out" Question: Do you have the Over-drive or any buttons selected? This is comming for revving out, usually the overdrive band eventually comes off or gets eaten away and the car does this when pressing your foot down on the accelerator. Make sure its all off,
Sounds warn down to me, could be first gear gone. Does the car move at all if you hold it down for a while?
Before replacing the trans the most likely thing is the TCU or ECU or solenoid or the gear selectors come off!
Tranmissions:
You can risk a 2nd hand one but then you might get a 4 month warranty with it and if it faults after that could cost more. (anywhere from $300 - $1000+) (extra/some might include installation) (No warranty to 12 months)
You can Recondition your one which I reckon is the safest unless you personally know a mechanic. (anywhere from $1000 - $3000+) (This requires pulling it apart piece by piece and replacing and cleaning parts, opening up inside, replacing plates, seals etc)
(12 months minium to 2 years)
The longer the warranty the better, the mitsubishi one dosent sound too bad either.

First get the TCU and ECU tested, but im still curious about why theres nothing on the dash, was it working before hand???
Gear selector sounds its not working

Dash works fine, if i put it in reverse it still shows its in reverse, or any other gear. As far as i know magnas at least my one have ECU & TCU combined in one. Nothing unusuall lights up on the dash, i got a $1700 quote to recondition my one.

$1700 is decent, BUT before going ahead get the car's ECU/TCU checked. Your transmission might still be fine and could be a computer problem. I cant stress this enough as its happened to alot of people (its a computer problem not the actual trans)
If you dont know, mitsubishi transmissions are a joke. I had mine reconditioned and couldnt even tell it was my car, was worth it. But im over mitsubishi :doubt:
Are all the buttons off? Over-drive? A/t mode? make sure they are unselected (its hard to diagnose without see'ing the car)

maybe read the second post again
Getting a manual conversion done can up to $3500. Do a search and you will find prices of some of those that have done it. You have to hunt around to find a manual first and then have it fitted. If time is not a problem go for it for big power to wheel gains...if not, get one from mits. Also 3rd gens dont have any buttons to select

yeah well for $3500 you have to consider it as 3rd gen prices are a joke now. No re-sale value, bad investment unless you have money to waste.
And I read everything. Everyone says "manual" "manual" "manual" consider why you bought a Auto in the first place.

I notice two TJ Magnas at Pickles hail auction at Chipping Norton this Saturday. Each with about 125K on them. Is it worth getting them and transferring the box- then sell all the other bits on Ebay ? ( I note you come from NSW)

Would have to very careful as to the tyoe of transmissions they have. If all of the codes from the gearbox numbers don't match up, the ecu will go into limp home mode. Final drive gear varies a bit. check the two lines of numbers beside your trans filter (if fitted) and compare.

I have decided to go through with $1700 reconditioning (of my own box). If manual conversion was not such a hustle I would have gone through with, I got quoted at few places for over 3gs. I don’t care about reselling value of my TJ (I bought it brand new), not planning on selling it anyhow. I just finished my interior, got a set of wheels, xenon parras , bonnet scoop, about to put in a ralliart front bar. Supercharger (raptor is a definite in next 6 months). Yes I know manual is better, but comfort means a lot to me and shifting gears in traffic on the way from work doesn’t really appeal to me.

I just got my car back all up it cost me $3000, thats with reconditioning the trans., timing belt kit, resealing rocket covers, spark plugs, leads...... The problem is when he put the transmission back the lever is so tight and it doesnt match the writing next to it. eg when i put in drive its still in neutral and i cant put it into L because i cant simply shift it down any further. Any advise on how fix it?

sounds to me that the cable/rod connecting the shift handle to the transmission must be the wrong length. check where the cable/rod connects to the shifter and check if there is another point to attach it.

Just take it back there and show them, you paid good money.
