View Full Version : Climate control lighting.
Speaking of Climate control in the other thread opened tonight, it reminded me of my own little problem with my climate unit. For some reason, the left hand side controls don't always light up, but when they don't I simply tap the unit firmly and they come on. Also got the same issue with the screen itself, only the left hand side lights up, so the whole thing is bright enough to see, but not very clearly during the day.
Can I dismante the front of the unit somehow to check the wiring etc? or do I need to replace the whole thing to fix this? If replacing it is the only option, what sort of prices am I looking at?
Cheers
Edit: To try and demonstrate the issue, some crappy photos!
They look terrible, but I had to bring the brightness right up to make it clear what you can see in the car. The issue isn't quite so dramatic in person with the screen, but its quite noticeably lighting up to the left hand side.
Before tapping:

Now once I've tapped it firmly so the lights come on, they stay on, until I switch the car off and leave it for a while, then they're out again. Its really quite odd and quite annoying.

Sounds like that side globe is on it's way out. My green ring around the "D" used to do it as well - on 1 minute, gone the next - tap, tap and its back on. Ended up getting sick of tapping it so I got it replaced. No more tapping!!!

Actually my D light doesn't work either, but that doesn't bother me, I know if theres no light its in drive :P
Reckon I should just ask the mech to fix it when it goes in for its next service?

I used to be like that with my other cars, but it buggs me when something doesnt work when it should. Shouldn't cost you much at all to get fixed. I got the guy who wired up my amps to do it while he had the dash apart.
Yeah now you mention it, its gonna annoy me all the time haha...I'll have to get that changed when it gets serviced too now lol
Its funny how used to that you get, both the TR and rada have those transmission lights, but the camry doesn't, so sometimes I second guess where it is when I'm in that.
Anywho, any self serviceable way to fix the climate, or should I leave it up to the mech? :P

It should only be a matter of taking off the surround around the climate control and stereo. Turn your lights on and check to see if it is a loose connection or in fact the globe/led needs replacing.

Climate control actually has LEDs in it.. they are a push and twist in style.. what you will need to do is pull the unit out and pull the back off it.. id say the globe just needs a little twist back into place so it makes a good connection again. If not you will need to replace. but if it still works then it say its a dodgy connection. if you need to replace they are $15-20 from mits.. not a hard job. just a pain to pull half your car apart to get to it..:)

That one would bug me ALL the time too, it's right there in front of me lol .
By the looks of it with the climate control removed from the dash piece you can pop the front cover off, but I never tried it.

Yep, I know that pain. When I installed my screen I didn't plug in the climate control so I had to dismantle it all again lol

Ah alright, so the face of the climate should just unclip :P Pulling it apart doesn't bother me, I've gotta rip it apart again soon to wire the electric Ariel up when I replace the mast anyway, and I've done it that many times it takes me all of 2 minutes to get the entire console out
Cheers man, I'll have a look when I've got some spare time and report back with the news.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know that the climate control unit actually costs to replace entirely? Because apart from the dodgy lights mine also has a bunch of scratches on the screen I don't like, but no one seems to sell them, like there's only diamante ones on eBay, and I'd imagine all those are in Fahrenheit?

Off-topic, but you mean there should be a green ring around the D?
if thats the case, mine's been dead since i got my Verada.
Is this a simple fix?

Yeah they're should be, its common for it to blow, probably cause the car is usually in D when moving. Pretty sure its just a globe, I haven't checked mine yet.
As for the climate problem, I opted to just replace the whole unit, hopefully all the lights will work on the new one! :D

yeah, depending on what model u have, but ont he dash, yes all the gears should have a green ring around them, its a common problem for the D light to go missing.
give mits a ring, and get another globe, which will require you pulling out your speddo assembly and putting it in (not hard, will take 10-15 mins), or u can just get htem to do it.
Well, I've put in the replacement climate unit, but the light for the right hand side of the screen still doesn't function.
Reckon it'd be a blown globe in this one too, or faulty wiring?
At least all the buttons light up now, better than half like the other one lol

Was it new or a wrecker part..???
Id say globe.. What did ya pay for the unit..??

Picked it up off a guy who had some spare bits a pieces from a 99 Verada. $25 for it, overall its in great condition, just the right hand side of the screen not lighting up is annoying. I suppose it is come on 9 yrs old now, so maybe I should look into a new globe? Or perhaps take the left screen globe out of the old one and fit it to the right side on the new one? Maybe thats a good way to check? hmmm
