Hey all,

My auto transmission has basically bit the dust and needs a replacement, Now my car is a 96 TE magna 2.4L and a 2nd hand auto box is going to cost quite a bit, Now i have found a 5 speed tippy box for quite cheap and just need to know exactly what needs to be done in order to get it to work?

I know this has been covered numerous times but not in regards to the 4cyl 3rd gen, Obviously i will need to get a new ECU for the tippy box but what else needs to be done? Or is this not even possible due to the 4cyl engine and the ratios being totally different?

Any info would be great

Regards

Would i just get the ECU out of a Tiptronic verada or sports equiv??? also does anyone know anything else on the wiring etc???

the ecu should be suited to the engine you have

the problem is the front engine bay auto wiring loom
you can buy a loom from a wrecker and swap it
DIY just dont cut anything

the tcu has to be compatable with the gearbox you fit

as long as the box bolts onto the motor

the gear shift console might need to chage for the new box
if the dash shows up the gears you may want to look into that

as for performance and ratios ...
gears may change more
speedo calibration may be out

what size motor usually is used on the 5 speed tippy you got

Thanks for that info magna buff much apreciated, What about the BEM?? Would this need to be changed??

bem stays the same

just check the drive shafts and splines they should be different

you may have to get some custom made for you
to suit your current outer hubs ...and the new gearbox diff

Would they definitely be different?? If so would you have an idea on cost for custom made drive shafts and splines just an approx? Im just trying to determine if this is gonna cost me more than a manual conversion!!

CV fittings into the auto box should already be sitting there so spline problem solved

you use your current drive shaft from the hub

if the cv unit is the 3 roller bearings type there wont be a problem

the bearings and boot just fit into the gearbox CV housing

and then the outer hub part stays the same

manual conversion ..$ 2000 approx ""get a written quote ""
gearbox, clutch pressure plate, flywheel , clutch pedal, hydraulic master and slave
gearshift and cables ,console maybe ,minimal wiring ,
engine/gearbox mountings should be the same,
instument panel to suit a manual if you are fussy

you want to make sure the clutch and flywheel are good as new
and the gearbox itself has no syncro problems

how will drivability be when you have a gear boxed that came from the 6G74 engine (being a 5spd tippy) to fit on a 4G64?

there will be a bit of strain on the engine to move the car... 316nm compared to 205nm... think about that before you proceed.

How will a different gearbox put any strain on the car? If anything, there will be less, as it has 5 gears so less effort, and the gearbox will be well over engineered.

I cant see why it would be a problem, i cant see the 4 speed auto and 5 speed tippy being much different in weight and yeh the ratios would be different due to it being bolted onto the 6G74 but thats why i need to change a few things over like the TCU etc so it can run as per normal, maybe even a piggyback to assist but it shouldnt affect the drivability of the car!!

Thanks magna buff you have been a big help

Now i just need to find a decent place to get this underway, Does anyone in vic know of a good place to try and get this conversion sorted? Regardless i will be hunting down the TCU and wiring loom on the weekend hopefully they are not to hard to come by

Anyone have a spare 5 speed tippy TCU and wiring loom laying around? lol
