G'day all,

I've been reading through the forum for the past few days and thought I'd introduce myself. I've recently purchased a Magna Exec 2001 (TJ I think). It's a stock standard with only 37K on the odometer and two years left on the warranty, so I was pretty pleased when I picked it up for only 15K :D In terms of mods, I'm planning on having the tinting done next week, and adding a pod with some extractors in the next couple of months.

My question is regarding fuel consumption. I've been driving fairly conservatively (about 9.3lt/100 acording to trip comp) for the past few weeks since I topped it up, and I've just hit 515km's. My needle is sitting on the notch just above the empty notch, but my trip computer tells me that I've got about 200km's to run until empty!! Surely this can't be accurate. Can anybody tell me roughly how long I've got till I have to start pusing, or does my trip computer need to be reset or looked at?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for waffling on a bit :)

Tom

Congrats on the purchase and welcome.

If you have a trip computer, check if you've got the mode that tells you how much fuel you have used.

I basically ignore the trip computer and the distance to empty, instead working off the gague that says I've used X litres. I know how big the tank is so that makes it easy.

Still.. the Magna tank is 70L (or is it 75L?).. so if you had a full tank and have been using 9.3L/100km then 70L gives you 752km of travel before you run out of fuel completely.

You can reset the computer yourself by holding down the mode change button for 3 seconds. It beeps and recalibrates.

I did the "hold down the reset button for 3 seconds" when I filled it up, so I assume the readings are as accurate as they can be. I guess the concerning thing is, is that if my "km to empty meter" reading is so far off, why wouldn't the other readings be inacurate as well?

I think I'll keep an eye on the needle as oppose to trusting the trip computer readings, just to save on the unnecessary excercise of having push the old girl up the monaro highway :D

Nah all this does is reset the data for the moment, ie clears KM travelled, KM/L average, time driven. It does not reset the dist to empty which is calculated on the fuel in teh tank and (I think initially) the average fuel consumption that the car has recorded.

You might try reseting your computer to your car. You do this by

...
(6) The "SET" code can be checked by holding the "MODE" button and turning the key from "LOCK" to "ACC".
(7) If the code is incorrect, disconnect the battery and repeat the above procedure.

ie does it show "S" for Sedan or "W" for wagon?
then show "3.0 litres" or "3.5 litres"

if this is so then you gotta disconnect the battery and go thru this one turn "ACC" or "ON" then if it shows the right thing then hold MODE for more then 2 secs. If you want the other then push the MODE for less than 2 secs. Then hold for more than 2 secs to confirm the setting.

you will get a beep

will show 3.5 or 3.0 again change it by holding MODE for less than 2 secs confirm by longer.

you will get a beep

the range to empty will not show for the first 5 mins of ignition on but then you should be fine.

It all depends on how hard u drive it also 8) 8)

your trip computer is working on the absolute max km you get from a tank, like best highway economy, if you are driving around town you wont get another 200Km, more likely another 100 to dead empty! do you have a fuel light, let it be your guide. ;)

Yes thats true, if you're "distance to empty" calculation is out, then most likely will all you're other measurements will be out as well.

You're cruising on the Monaro Hwy? It seems the "distance to empty" is calculating your distance based on your cruising fuel consumption, in this case 9.3L/100km.

It seems fairly accurate then, I know a Commodore cruising on the highway can do about 700km safely with one tank, with the addition of 5 litres (long range fuel tank 75L)

EDIT: Oops, this is more or less what Altera98 was saying.
