I am planning a driving holiday from Sydney to Alice/Uluru. I am wondering how far can a tank go on highway so I can plan refueling stops at cheaper locations.

If you done the trip before, can you advice if road condition is suitable for the magna?

Thanks

As to road conditions.. Its sealed the entire way (if you use the main roads)

Its a very very very boring drive. Also, dont plan on staying in Alice Springs.. its a hole..

You can read my little webpage about my efforts for driving to centre of aus.. (http://members.optusnet.com.au/miltonf/triptouluru/ulurutrip.html)

And be make sure you fill up at major fuel stops as the little outback fuel stations will be charging you anywhere from $1.75 - $2.00/L for Opal (its a unleaded fuel replacement.. and sucks for fuel economy)

P.S Watch out for Trapper Birds..

Is safety a real problem in the Alice? Can you walk around town without the fear of getting robbed? Would it be safe to park on the street without getting window smashed for a glovebox check?

Between Broken Hill and Alice/Uluru, which stops can you recommend for refuel at reasonable price?

Did you goto Uluru? Was the road sealed?

Im sure its safe enough in some places. Just dont park it near the big bunch of aboriginals out the front of the shops drinking alcohol and sniffing glue.

It depends, from Broken Hill are you heading into South Australia and then up along Port Augusta > Coober Pedy etc?

Yep the road was sealed the entire way.

P.S and for those of you who read my little adventure, hope you enjoyed it.. This year ive done the required K's hehe..

I think I would of refuel at Broken Hill since it is a large town. I am estimating a full tank's range to be about 500km on highways, right? (That link there isn't so accurate as I can't tell if they are on highways).

So Alice and Uluru must be one of refueling points, right? Do they sell regular unlead?

What other refueling points can you recommend?

You'd be looking at 700kms+ on the motorways

i have personally had 850km's to one 72 litre tank. Probably had another 50 k's of reserve fuel left in it

depending on conditions and driving style, you should see better than 9l/100km on the highway. that means 700+km out of a tank, depending on how low you like your fuel to get.

generally on long trips like that our auto TJ will get 800+km out of a tank...

however with where you are travelling I would not let it get low and also carry spare fuel...

our record is 937km out of a single tank.

937 is awesome! that must have been mid 7 l's per 100km

There is no proper unleaded fuel in NT anymore (91 ron). Only Opal which is the unleaded replacement - its been introduced to stop the local wildlife sniffing it. There is however Premium unleaded. You have to see the the guy in the store to get a key to unlock the bowsers.. lol

Just fill up at the major towns on the way.

Port Augustus
Coober Pety
Kalgera
Alice Springs

etcetc

Hi Bain

I loved reading about your little adventure.
I was also curious to know why you had to reach the 25,000 kms, I have just been given a company car and am wondering if I should be racking up a decent amount of k's to beat the tax man. I've googled about FBT but I cant figure out how this will affect me. The car is considered a 'tool of trade' ie they look after everything fuel service etc (as compared to a novated lease). I'd appreciate any links to good sites that actually explain how FBT affects my hip pocket

if it's a company car, you are under no financial obligation for it.

if it's a novated lease car, you are responsible for the FBT depending on what sort of km's you have your lease set up for.

for example, if you said you were going to drive 25000km in the 12 month period between 01 April and 31 March, and you didn't get to 25000km you are responsible for the difference in the FBT (11% at >=25000km vs 20% at <25000km) which won't have been taken as part of your lease payments.

that's a huge incentive to drive a few extra km's.

cheers,
.wook

sorry.. we should be politically correct

dont leave your motor vehicle stationary in the presence of a large gathering of native australians whom are congregating in the vicinity of shops whilst consuming alcoholic beverages and inhaling adhesive products

Bain: Is there a service station between Coober Pedy and either Alice Springs or Yulara/Uluru (I can't spot any town on google earth)? There's about 750km to travel and there's a chance I may run out of fuel...

Yes, you will want to fill up just over the boarder between SA/NT at the Kalgera fuel stop.

I think its about 20 - 50km's over the border.

You can safely fill up at Kalgera and get to either Alice Springs or Uluru and have around 1/4 tank left.

Both Uluru and Alice have ample fuel stations.

Drove down to Margeret River the other day and as said before over 700km would be easy. I did over 500 with over a quarter of a tank to go. 7.9l/100km on the trip meter.

I have to say that im very impressed with the fuel consumption that i get out of my ralliart. Im 11.5l/100km around town and gets down to 7.4l/100km on the highway thats about 800km to a tank...:D :D
