Help. I went to start my TJ series 2 tonight to come home from work and it wouldn't start. it actually started then stopped straight away. All it does is crank but now there are no signs of firing at all. Tried all my keys but no different. Any help would be appreciated as i started holidays today and need the car.

does it havve fuel in it / is it really low on fuel?

reason i ask - is because i have been caught out on that very thing before in older fords...
got plenty of cranking but no fuel getting in there to be able to start the car...
a jerry of fuel sorted that one.

sorry if its a lame suggestion - but its a start.

when was the last time it ran?
any odd happenings before you shut it down and left it?

EDIT - i think if it was a key / immobiliser problem, the car wouldnt crank at all.

my TL is prone to flooding the cylinder on start up. it would crack, start then die immediately. sometimes, it will crank up straight after, but others you may have to let it sit for a min or so before trying to crank it again before it would start.

It was only about 20 mins since it was last started and had no issues at all then. It has half a tank of fuel in it so thats not the problem either.

there was a problem with the wiring in some TJs.

I'll try and find the thread. something to do with the immobiliser I think.

cheers,

Have you noticed any slight reluctance to start, say over the last week or so? The problem you're describing happened to my 2001 TJ soon after I bought it. Turned out to be the computer chip that recognises the ignition key - I think it's called the Body Control Module, or something like that. If so, it will have to be towed to a Mitsubishi dealer to have a replacement fitted. Your keys will also need to be re-programmed to suit.

Could be the key ring antenna. If you have a multimeter handy you can test it. Its located around the ignition barrel. Should be around 6ohms resistance.

Problem Solved. After spending 3 F ***ing hours on the ignition ring, immbiliser system, the ECU and the BCM, i thought as a last resort i might try the petrol/gas changeover module. Checked the wiring and belted it a couple of times and bingo, it started. only ran for about 8 seconds, stopped and would not start again. Belted it and fiddled with the wiring again and it started. I changed it over to gas straight away and it kept running. Straight to the Gas place i went and after some fiddling, the petrol/gas module was faulty. Only 2 months old. The guy told me it is the 3rd one they have had that is faulty so must be a bad batch. Still, back on the road and all is ok now. Thanks to EVERYONE that offered help. It is much appreciated.:) :) :) :) :)
