Hey all,
Thinking of getting bigger rims but I'm not sure of what rims suit Magnas the best. Thinking 17's with maybe a five spoke but am looking for suggestions and examples so feel free to attach pics of your own ride. Also thinking of lowering, what are your thoughts e.g. How far, etc?
Thanks in advance.

how much do you have to spend man?
$1000 will get you a set of 19"s, $1300ish will get you some 20"s (2nd hand of course)
I would never buy new rims just for the depreciation value.
New 19"s rims and tyres are like $2200??? Hell a 2nd gen isnt worth $2200!!

The 17" VR-X rims go a treat on 2nd gen magnas.

what ever you get go something with a decent offset, so they sit as flush with the guards as possible, no point in going big wheels if they still dont fill the guards up, and 2nd gens can take 20" pretty easy, with the correct width and offset
if you are getting 17's, the further out you push them to the guards, the more impact they will have, alsmot give the impression of a bigger wheel.
Im going 17's and ive tried a couple widths and offsets, i didnt have tyres on, so i couldnt get a grasp if they were going to scrub but off the top of my head, i think i had on the front a 9"wide with a +26 offset? might have been 32 or something liek that.
the offset can make or break the appearance of the wheel and car package

Yeah, I had heard that before. Any chance I could get some pics of 17's, 18's etc to see what sort of size I might like the most.
Oh, and Tuffy, I agree completely with most Magnas not being worth $2,000, that's why I was thinking maybe something like 17's.
If you love your wheels guys, show me a pic, I need inspiration.

You could always go for 16's, some of the Verada ones are nice and can be picked up cheap from members that have "upgraded"; mine cost me $300 with good tyres.
Could do with lowering maybe 1 - 2 inches, but I'm still contemplating a, shall we say, "dynamic system"

ford territory rims FTW:D
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i178/longwombat/DSCF1469.jpg
haha i got mine off ebay for $51 with tires that have about 40% tread left on them, they are 17x7.5 and scrub a tiny bit near full lock without lowering the car....
I only bought them because they were cheap, in the future ill be upgrading to something a little more classier but if you want something that looks a little better then stock they are a very cheap option.
Keep your eyes out for rims in the paper and on the net and stuff, you can pick up some cheap 17's for around the $200 mark if your lucky.

sorry champ, didnt get any pics, if i brought them i would have, but i was going to put a 235/45/R17 on a 9" rim with a 30 offset on the front,
the overall height difference is enough to allow 10mm more push intowards the spring seat on the strut housing, and pushes the outsite edge to roughly inline with the gaurd maybe 2mm out past the gaurd but the tyre remains underneath the guard.
when it comes to buying i might drop back to 8.5" wide just to be on the safe side, i did experience some scrubbing, definetly could live with it, but i could have changed the wheel allignment to compensate more for the width, with stock allignmnet (economy) there was some scrub, not enough to wreck a tyre

go something with sharp edges. either heaps or minimal spokes as in 10-12 or 5,6 or 7 respectively. Also, i've found that wheels with large centrecaps dont match the 2nd gen, have the wheel nuts visible. Keep in mind, that to look sporty, minimal spokes (as in 5,6 or 7) need to have rather large brakes if they're going to be large wheels (18/19').
in the end its up to personal preference. I love the look of BBOSS Eleanors on a 2nd gen.

Yeah, I was thinking about a 5 spoke that looks pretty chunky. Will post in the wanted section, but if anyone's got something on hand with tyres and decent tread please gimme a bell.
Any other suggestions?

One of my mates owns a commodore and has 17's which look absoultely sweet (can't remember exactly what model but I'll get back to you). I know they don't fit 'cos of the nut configuration being 116mm and ours being 114.3mm. He's getting bigger rims so he said he'd give them to me if they fitted. Obviously the don't but we lined them up and it completely changes the look of the car.
My question is what would be involved in changing my Magna wheel config to a Commodore config and roughly how much might it cost?
As the wheels look sweet and he's giving them to me I may do this mod if it's low cost.

lol If you upgrade from 19"s to 20"s your definitely compensating for something!
I reckon on a 2nd gen, a set of 18" Graphic mags would look great:

Fair call, but if you parked that next to a stockie, it would look nothing like a Magna. Cops probably don't really know if it's a Magna 'cos of the Diamante grill and the wing and all that.

I wasn't thinking of changing the wheels, I was thinking of changing the threads and everything it's connected too. But I thought it might be a bit expensive 'cos it looks like you need to change the brakes, etc. Might actually be able to upgrade to a better brake system if I went to a Commodore too. Overall, it's probably not worth it.
By the way, the wheels i was looking for were the 17" VY S-pack alloys, looked very shmik on my car considering they're Holden.

they'll look great.
17's look great on a 2nd gen but 18's would look better. The vrx rims also suit really well with superlow springs. Randoms love my wheels. (ralliarts)
19's make it a 4x4 with big wheels and make your brakes look small and detract from performance/handling.

That's what i was thinking, may be getting it lowered too (which it desperately needs) so it'll really set the car off if I do get bigger rims.

I trust you found your wheels very heavy?
I think it's time i got a sway bar
On the popo note its true. I did the 3 to 2 lane chop from the left lane bit of hammering no wheelspin. Notice a weirdly coloured car to my right. The cops---> cbf pulling me over.

They are not super lightweight but about as heavy as stockys.
Honestly AJ, Swaybar is just fantastic. I rave about it to everyone. It handles so well you really dont think its a 15yo FWD car. Car just STICKS and GRIPS and ive thrown it pretty hard around some corners. (no twisties runs just yet though)
I got the brackets welded onto the car so installtion cost me $40 so if you buy the bar new probably set yourself $200 to get it in.
Its an awesome mod...
Rims are something that is really personal preference and what look you like for your car. bigger rims generally loose that sporting look but it looks more pimp IMO. i think that with a second gen that anything upwards of 17s look fine. i have 17 inch AMG lightweight racing wheels on mine, not sure what they came off but there are lighter than stockies and look good and sit flush with the guards. gives them the apperence that they are bigger than they are. and after have 17s on my last car (lancer) i also like the fact that 17 are legal on magnas. but also, as with any wheels, suspention upgrades always set them off, otherwise the car looks like a 4x4 imo

ever since i first measured up the 2nd gen, i thought to myself, would need 20" to make use of these guards, problem is the bank roll doesnt accommodate engine conversion and 20" otherwise id be in!
