View Full Version : Car batteries
Hi all,
Got a question regarding car batteries. Mine died last night. Picked up the wifey, went to
pick up the daughter and afterwards, it won't start. Can't lock/unlock doors etc as well.
Called RAA (arrived in 5 minutes, which in my books is a record). Turns out a flat battery
(only has 10volts and won't charge).
Problem is, I can't find anybody that sells 600CCA batteries that will fit the compartment.
Ended up bying a 550CCA battery instead. Now the question is, will there be a long term
problem with using a lower CCA battery (I noticed, it takes a few more cranks to start
then usual).
Cheers all,
Vlad

550CCA should be fine for your car, it's just the amount of amps that your battery can deliver on cranking the motor.

Thanks for that. I wonder where Mitsu got the OEM 600CCA batteries from then as I went
to York Mitsu in Adelaide this morning and all they had were the 550CCA ones.

Can't lock/unlock doors etc as well.
Insert key into door lock barrel... turn key.
As Lucy says.. 550cca is more than enough.

Errr keys I havent used a door key for 3 years, the only time I need it is for the boot and duh the ignition.
Keys are primitive, keyless entry! (Houses with keypads instead of locks)

I'm guessing the reason for 600cca is that everything is electric/electronic. Inserting key
into keyhole on drivers door does nothing if the battery is dead. That is why I ended up
calling RAA as I couldn't leave the car on the street with it unlocked and since it is an
AWD, I can't take it out of P to push it into my in-laws garage. No key holes for the boot
in the later models as well. Also, flicking the locking mechanisms on the inside does nothing
as well.
Note that the car came from factory with a 600cca battery.

Nah, 600 is just a big safe figure to assure it starts first time every time. Power door locks don't use 600A every time they are actuated. Strange that the key doesn't turn the lock over, perhaps it triggers the electronic solenoid inside on key turn. Weird!

You have been talking to my wife again havn't you lol
I do not know about your car, ours actually locks the drivers door when the key is used and the battery is flat.....:)
Don't tell me you are like the other half and would stand in the rain for half an hour until help arrives as the lights were on, the battery was flat and the remote would not work? :bowrofl:

If your starter motor pulls more than about 120A then its pretty darned big. Magnas run a reduction drive starter IIRC as well.
550CCA is a 55AH battery too BTW. A 600CCA battery is a 60AH battery. This means you can draw 60A for one hour and flatten the battery or 1A for 60 Hours.
Going a larger battery means you have a larger reserve capacity.

Erm... 430CCA is enough? But if you've got a stereo, upgrade by all means :D

Nah.... My old KS was like that, the key can manually lock and unlock the doors. However,
in the KW, when turning the key, all I can hear is a feint whirring sound but nothing
happens. The only thing that can be opened is the boot via the button in the glove box.
I sat in the car waiting for RAA as I could not lock the doors.

Optima D34, otherwise known as a yellow top.
Fully deep cycle battery, which means if it goes flat, it can be recharged again, and be fully functional, whereas most batteries go funny once they are recharged from flat.
Massive cranking amps, something along the lines of 800, or so.
Tend to have a life of 10 or so years, and, rarely go flat. :D

yeh nice battery and all, but i notice you didn't flash the price in here.
unless your a serious backpacker or have an insane sound system a d34 isn't really justifiable.
but since when do we need to justify what we buy. lol

Couldnt remember how much there worth. I paid $300 for mine i think, or there abouts.
Considering a normal, decent quality battery can cost between 100-150, and yellow tops have a longer life, its really, not expensive.
The initial outlay is larger, for a longer lasting battery :D
But yes, I have audio, lol.
