smells like valve stem seals

bit off topic- LIAM, is your TR a 6 or a 4 pot?

Smoke is stem seals
Idle, you wil have blow by with the seals, this will cause your breather to do overtime, there is a breather hose in the intake pipe, your TB is prob clogged with oil thus the low idle.
Is not a hard fix.

SIK BRO! lol. just wondering, because my engine idles low aswell. I start her up, and of course, the idle goes up to 1000, but then drop to about 2-300 and then jump between 400-500 when cold. BUT, then they go between 600-750 when warm. this might be able to help me aswell.lol
Idling should be around 650-700 on a 4 banger. I can confidently say that because thats roughly where mine sits (off the top of my head), and atm its not broken lol

depends, my idle is erratic. at times it will sit at 500 when warm and shake the hell out of everyone in the car, at other times it'll idle at 700 in D or 600 in D.
back OT, this is liams thread.
sorry liam

In the workshop manual it says 750 idle speed.

mine always idless round 500 and it vibrates like crazy. chuck it in neutral and it goes to about 700(-ish)
LIAM, as for your smoke.. as mentioned above its the seals. same prob on mine and got told this morning what it was.
ive been quoted about 300 to replace. anybody else got quotes?
what about the idle control motor, that was shot in my old TS and that caused the engine to idle poorly. after the engine had been revving (driving or just reving) the revs would drop right down then either stall or bounce back up.
just a thought

the revs would drop right down then either stall or bounce back up.Wouldn't the bouncing back up indicate that it did in fact work?

i the way it was explained to me was that the idle control motor is to stop that bounce, the actuall idle itselft is set by other things.

this is EXACTLY what I am experiencing.
If i'm sitting in the driveway when cold and I give the motor a little rev, it'll go up (ie 2000rpm) then drop completely (200-300 rpm) then go back (400-500 rpm.) When hot, i'll rev it from idle (700 RPM in N) and it'll go to say 2000rpm, drop to 400rpm and go back up to idle.

if the car is idling and you rev it do you get a flatspot where it drops way down in revs then bounces back up?
my car does this because the ISC is buggered and i couldnt be bothered fixing it, worse if you have air con and stuff on, ive gone around a corner with no throttle, full air con, then hit full lock on the steering and had the car stall because of the strain on the engine without the ISC to control the revs.

mine kinda shakes hard and then pulls back up (only rarely stalling-noticed when cold and in gear, blipping the accelerator will result in stall) . My Idle drop 200RPM when a/c is turned on and doesnt comeback up. I had a feeling it was something like this. Any idea how to fix it?
I feel like i've threadjacked. sorry liam.

yep thats exactly what mine does, you rev and instead of going up straight away it drops down, shakes and then goes up eventually, only does this when its in gear, need a new ISC, pretty sure if you search youll find how to replace it, its just a motor i think that plugs in somewhere?

Gregory's says it's located just below the TB. an unscrew and replace kinda thing it says.

I am experiencing similar blue smoke problems. my question is, is it the piston rings or stem seals? the rings would blow smoke all the time right? where as seals would only blow smoke on idle or startup?
i can get my head reconditioned for $300, not bad imo. im assuming ive got blown stem seals, compression is 160-170psi on all 4 from memory, sounds about right yeah?
a few people reckon its rings but rings would mean smoke all the time and lower compression right?
cheers tim

pretty sure it's stem seals when the car is idled for a while and blue smoke comes out when accelerator is depressed or when the engine is put under load. dont quote me on that.

Stem seals when start up or longer idle.
Rings if under load
$300 is for head, however do not forget the VRS set and labour if any
YOu can easilly do the stem seals head on if you have any mechanical skill

yeah thats what i thought, good 2 know its the head, not the rings. i can get the head fully reconditioned for $300, thats seats, valves, lifters, seals, everything checked, tested cleaned and replaced where neccessary. VRS kit is under $100 from work.
i think ill go through with it:cool:
