hey all any idea's why i have blown two amps in the space of 2 weeks?
i was running a DUB 400w mono amp for ages then she fryed thought it was coz it was one week out of warranty.lol but no fuses were blown or anything? i jsut disconnected my sub and when i put it back in it didnt work? next i put in me missus kenwood 180 2 channel amp( which went harder than the mono block!?) and that blew nearly within a week? same thing no fuses gone, just went quiter all of a sudden then no signal at all!
im running a pioneer 12" 1000w sub with a pinoeer headunit. any ideas!?:doubt:
thanks heaps

seems like the amps are either getting too much power or they are overheating
what power wire are you running?

For a while mine was overheating, turning off and then turning back on once the H/U was turned off and turned back on again.
might be that the fuse is lets through too much power. might need a smaller fuse for the amps?

Did you hear any clipping occuring?
If you say the kenwood 2 ch went harder, i fear you may have had your gains up too high and this has resulted in the amp trying to output a clipped signal.

Fuses blow when too much power goes through lol

i dno...chucking idea through. for instance, a 20A fuse mite send too much power to something which needs a 10A fuse. this is what i meant. im no electrical genius...

ive got a Kicker ZX350.2 powering 300w @ 4ohm and it gets very hot when i have it loud, sometimes it turns off. I dont think if it gets too hot it will blow, mine just reset.
i'd hate to take a stab at the designers of these amp but shouldnt the FUSE blow to save the AMP, and not the other way around?

mmm i think i couldve over heated the kenwood but not the mono, that thing coped a beating and when i gave it time off it blew!? i didnt hear and clipping no? talked to a mate who used to do the installs for autobahn reckons ive wired me headunit up dodgey somewhere. becuase after the first amp went the head unti kept "skipping" even when it was on the radio aswell.left it off for a coup[le days and it fixed. so ill get him to have a look at it i guess.
could it be something to do with my battery maybe? my car seems to be ideling low now and when i get to low revs it takes a while between gears and jumps forward after i stop

Ok im not an expert here but i would think you are stressing the amp causing it to overheat.
if youve wired up the HU dodgey i dont see how that would affect the amp.
Cause only thing connecting your HU and AMp are your RCA's and remote wire.
And well the remote wire is working cause its turning on and you cant really stuff up your RCA's
I mean tim would be able to probably suss it out better for you...
was it earthed properly? and did your amp voltage match the HU voltage?

amp voltage and HU voltage? ergh not a clue? what adjustment would that be on my headunit? ill check out that tmr

Well like my HU has 2v preouts so on the amp i place it to roughly 2v aswell....
I was under the impression that say putting the amp to 6v puts it under stress...
And putting it to say 200Mv just restricts it
On my HU i dont think there is a setting for it, just on the amp.
Can someone who has more Car audio knowledge please clarify what i said? I want to make sure i'm talking about fact here not just mumbo :s

haha yeah i think i know what you mean cant remmber my settings, crazy new hu has so many. makes sense what yours saying but
could it be something to do with my battery maybe? my car seems to be ideling low now and when i get to low revs it takes a while between gears and jumps forward after i stop
Mines been doing that exact same thing lately, but only on occasion, after I've been running around for a bit, but its only started happening since the headunit was installed, so I'm guessing the tranny has messed up that learning process, which I'm going to test by disconnecting the battery for a bit when I get around to it, might be an idea for you too? Just a thought.

yeah i disconnected it on the w/e, went alright but still idled low, now this afternoon its startin to do the jumping thing pretty bad, seems like the sound is draining too much power? my little red battery light keeps coming on too, when i had the sound cranking and driving around slow / stopped it started coming on now its a regualr accruance

get a multimeter and check your battery voltage. make sure you havent dropped a cell or the battery isnt damaged. also check that your alternator is working properly.

Yeah well I'm not getting any of that, if a disconnect and reconnect doesn't fix my problem, I'm going to throw in a new battery, it feels like its taking ever so slightly longer to turn over lately, if your getting your battery light popping up, I'd definitely be looking at the battery and alternator.

Also 8g is pretty thin for a hefty sub and monoblock...
While you have got your multimeter out, check the voltage at the end of the power cable where it meets the amp.
Also with your GND cable, have you got a long one going all the way back to the battery? Or just a short one to a bolt near the amp somewhere? It should just be a short run, less than 1m.
Im wondering whether your amps are dying from struggling to suck enough current from the battery...

okay i am ganna say something here how have u got the amps mounted ie can they amp's breath under them if u look at the flat panel can air getinto the amp also are they mounted upside down ? ...... cause i had a amp that did close to what u are saying and when i pulled it apart all it was was the heat sink contact glue had some how went away and it was heating up way to much .........it's only my idea but have a look how they are mounted .....also for a mono block amp u wanna be using either 0 or 2ga wire as they suck heaps of power ...... my fusion 1500watt rms mono block cut's out when i pull up at a set of light's get the alternator fixed or get rewired to handle more power also get a sealed 550cca battery.........or yellow top battery

mmm never thougght of that? the ground is just short cable bloted under the carpet under the passenger seat there. its going in to mitsu on monday, ill get them to check the altenator ey? how much voltage should i be getting at the end of the power cable?

mm its under the passenger seat? i know they did get really hot. ill pull apart the amps tonight finally and see what i can see. yeah im thinking getting a big battery too. this one was from auto pro but found out they sell them at big w :S. excide or seomtihng

I know head units are pretty sensitive to voltage.... if your dropping down to 10.5v its gunna skip and muck up. Same with the amps. i presume the battery/alternator.
IME my amps just cut when they get too hot, then reset and come back normal, never blown a fuse.
Will explain low idle too...low voltage will do this.

I would say it'd be the way the wiring is, check your grounds, check your power wire to the battery, check that you have a fuse on that wire near the battery - might be worth getting a smaller one? - check that the power cable isn't damaged and touching on metal etc.

**** amps seen a few not last but how high have you got the gain running on the amp? on any amp gain should be the lowest you can have it so the best way to do this is turn everything at the head unit up and on the amp down this takes the stress off the amp
