Let me guess. It was the exhaust that made contact ? It happened to my old car and had the exact same damage.

if you want to do the the labour yourself and take out the inner plastic shell
A quote only too paint the under coat
and then when ready respray the car the colour you want
DIY
bump the dent out a bit
then body fill and sand
should come up ok and no holes in the metal

No don't bang out a bit and fill, dont bog and fill, it is not a commodore :)
You will need to get access from inside or use a spot dent puller
Once out, you will need to shrink the hell out of it and then you will be able to get a near metal finish. I would say the $1k quote would be doing just that.
You do not want deep body filler, it will especially in a place like that eventually crack if someone leans too hard on the panel.

you went to the wrong place for a quote ...think outside the square
go to a camper trailer business and have them fit
a pull out gas cooker , fridge and bar
a roll out roof canopy in case it rains
for cruzez and picnics
ps dont worry about the fuel tank ......she'll be right mate

EPA guidelines are very strict in relation to the removal of dust, thinners, left over paint, contaminated rags, paper etc.
Generally a workshop will have a standard charge on a per panel basis to cover these costs.
