Hey peeps just had an issue tonight. The car was working fine and all. Lights were working etc. Then it rained real heavy and 2 hours later i tried to put the headlights on and they came on for a bit then flickered and went off. Same with the high beam. It occasionally decided to "turn on" then flickered off again. Now the high beam and low beam doesn't work. I checked the fuses and all ok and bulbs are not blown. Wiring is all okay too. Parkers/fogs work along with the tail lights etc.
So basically when i try to turn the headlights on and click the high beams they don't work.
Any idea what could be causing this? Kinda spun out about it.

the switches do tend to wear out with time, so maybe the stalk is damage.

Seems like weird advice, but my car was doing this with the drivers side low beam because the wrong globe was fitted, seems like low odds to have 4 wrong globes in your headlights, but it might be worth checking? I dunno, thats my only idea.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Thanks lenny as well. If it's the stalk i'll grab a one from the wreckers.

Hmm could it be that the wattage is too much? Because i recently changed the low beam headlight bulbs to some standard narva ones from the servo. I didn't really check the wattage i just grabbed some H4's and whacked them in. And they seemed to work well for the last 2 weeks since they were in?

Check your relays mate, is a common issue

The 2nd gen ralays are rubbish, the metal cover retains heat and they fry

Get relays from a first gen, the plastic square ones, these wil fit in and may solve all your issues

Coolies. Thanks paula and mal. Yeah i upgraded one of the relays for the fogs because that kept blowing up. So i'll sus out the relay for the headlights tomorrow and report back.

Much appreciated guys.

LOL copier hahahahahhaa
Haven't heard that since primary school

It flickered on and off this morning then it died again. Could still be a relay you think?
Cos if it's the stalk then i'll rush up to the wreckers in an hour or two and grab one off a verada

this happened to me while driving up to rocky, they flickered every now and then then all of a sudden, out they went never to work again, Turns out the headlight relayunder the bonnet let go, but looks ok, till you open it up, and the contacts are missing so the circuit doesnt compltete when there is power to it.

this happened also after changing headlight bulbs, but admittedly they were a higher wattage AND they were on for 5hours staight

no one can see your car in the dark ... so park it

only drive it in the daylight hours

buy a first genner for night driving ..problem solved ha ha ha

Yep it was the headlight relay exactly as lynel and the rest explained.
So just incase this happens to anyone else some day, don't panic just change the relay.
Seems to be all good now :)

i have a 1996 magna, and all of a sudden my lights wouldnt work or turn on...got parkers, and when this first happened, the headlights were just really dim, but then they wouldnt work altoghether, except for parkers....where is the headlight relay switch for headlights under the bonnet? I've had the fuses checked, and they're all fine....i got no idea what to do or what to look for....but a friend told me that the relay switch wasnt making a clicking noise as it's spose to do when going from low beam to high beam......heeeellp????

There's a little black box on the passengers side of the engine bay.

Give the relay a few light taps and they should come back on.

Replace the relay if required..
