View Full Version : Not your average suspension

Ok so i recently installed some air bag suspention.
To tell the truth I’m not real happy with the height in the front. Basically the struts I have in are the smallest I can put in. Due to the drive shaft I can’t weld them any lower in the car because they will hit the drive shaft or the bags will be to low and hit the tyre.
So I’m looking at other ways of getting it lower.
Option quick fix: (I don’t like this option.)
Take the strut top off completely, stick the strut up through the tower then put the strut top upside down on the outside of the tower and tighten the bolts from the inside.
Better option!!
Is it possible to get a strut top that has a higher arch to take some of the strut up inside the bonnet a bit more?
I know suspension places make heaps of different strut tops but mostly for adjusting camber ect.
Picture of what I want here.

Another Inch lower in the front and id be happy. The back is going to be easy to make lower.

yup
i know with older XD / E / Fs falcons etc - people used to put 'spacers' on the topsite of the suspension tower to raise the top mounting point of the shock - which gave them a lower stance up front.
anyone who has seen an xd/e/f will know what i mean
im not sure if they where made at home or purchased tho - and how legal they are is another point entirely

CHeers, still not really sure where i could stick a spacer to make the car lower.
Ill have to drop by Pro Bag when i go home for Easter.

changing the mounting hieght is your only option
i would say look at getting someone (engineer) to cut out and reweld the strut top mounting point another 20mm higher or what have you, and re-inforce it, will cost a bit of coin, but its your only option, and if the **** fails and you have a accident, i wouldnt wanna be you when the police turn up to make babies with your backside
at least if an engineer does it or agrees to it you may have a leg to stand on if anything comes of it. IE engineers report.
good luck anyways, car looks toight

That seemed like the best idea to me at first but as you said $$$$$ & Legality.
Maybe ill get the ENg report first while its pretty much a bolt in kit ;)
That way i can bring it up to the top right neer the bonnet maybe 1-2" lower.
The back im going to leave untill engineered then chop the bracket of the bottom of the strut and weld it on the side HAHA. Then it will sit on the road...

Sucks your in melb... i prolly could have done something to help... i like the suggestion of cutting and rasing the tower tops, but i dont know how you would go for clearance when the bonnet shuts... may have to put bonnet bulges in like the MX5's...
Being and fabricator engineer if done correctly there should be no issues with strength...
As the welds can often be stronger.(if done correctly)
What about cutting off the bottom of your strut so you can lower it more without fouling on the drive shaft.. Weld on a tire valve to regas,....
Just an option.
No point getting it engineered if you're going to screw around with it later since they'll bust you for it then. There are probably legal ways and safe ways to have it the height you want, and changing the height of the front strut towers would be possible.

I kinda live between Wollongong/Wagga/Wangaratta. Home town/ GF place / Work.
Ill have a talk to the place i got the kit and see what they suggest they are in Dapto (When im back in Wollongong for Easter). Then see about fabbing something up if need be.
So im around your way a bit. ?? Wollongong
All i need to get it Engineered ATM is a relay to stop me from bouncing around when the cars on and a cut so i can only drive between 50- 70 PSI in the baggs.
Problem is if i spend $500 getting a certificate how will i go when i moove back to NSW in 6-12 Months? But thats another tread i can Open. (Dont reply about that in here hijack my own thread)

yeah it seems heaps higher at the front than other bagged magnas? like no offence but there is magna's not bagged that are lower than that at the front atm.? maybe you could look at your actual bags etc to get more drop? how much psi you putting into them?
the first option seems dodgey and the quick way always turns out the bad way with cars.
how much clearance do you have with the actaull wheel till the strut bottom?

It is definitly high in the front.
Yes i know there are other non bagged magnas that are lower, but they cant tow a boat or a motorbike or go up a gutter or on dirt tracks....... im a country boy..... and above all if they are any lower than mine in the front they wouldnt be legal anyway.
i ultimatley need shorter struts for the front. There is some clearance probally 2 inches.
I talked to a few people and they think the best idea is to cut the bottom of the strut off (the plate just above the wheel where the bag sits on) and weld a new one on 2" closer to the tire.
there are definatly bags that will compress more, but probally only 1-2 cm max not worth the price of the new bags.
So ill talk to a welder thisarvo and see what they can do i think that this would be the best option. Ill keep you guys updated.
Drives nice about 50 PSI goes all the way up to 120. its driavable at 0 PSI but only about 15-20 km. The plan is to get it lower then itll drive at about 50 PSI but be as low as it is now at 0 PSI.
Also im making it hard for myself by going.... well the NA approach you could say. Not cutting or hacking of the actually car.
My biggest issue is $$$ Engagment party last weekend, wedding coming up, honey moon in Sabah then travel Europe for 6 months!!!!!!! all of which are taking priority ATM HAHA

i feel so bad about saying that about your front man! , i just was wondering how come it wasnt as low as i thought? always turns out so much harder than expected ey.! lols no wonder you needed bags then, good combo between gangsta and magnaoutback! that sounds like a good idea with the taking the bag plate down lower to the wheel but would that effect it much when driving? or does the plate stay the same distance away from the wheel?
you get some awesome lift out of it but .
far out good to see ya still hitting up the car anyways dude! sounds like you would be living off home brand noodles.lol

Mi Goreng noodles and Tuna on toast.
Nah its cool motivating me ot get it lower.
ok so the current plan is as follows for this weekend.
measure and see if its possible to drop the plate 2" without the inside of the strut hitting the top plate when its down. Probally wont be to much of an issue as long as i dont drive it around fully layed out but id prefer to be able to
