Hey guys,

New to the site so im not sure if this type of problem has been posted already. Good for the sparkys out there...
Got a '03 TL vr-x recently and lately the battery light has been flashing, meaning there are charging problems. Thought nothing of it, prolly something loose. One day couldn't start engine - had a flat battery. Checked the amperage coming from the battery when the car is completey off and its still sucking about 3 amps! Unplugged fuses separately and the car still sucking power. Don't know whats goin - gonna check regulator tomoro. Any ideas? ANy help is appreciated.

Cheers

Just out of curiousity, and sorry if it's teaching you to suck eggs, but how did you go about checking the current draw?

the car must have an electrical leak somewhere
or it may be a faulty battery
should be able to take it to mitsubishi for a check over

Na not a faulty battery coz its brand new and i know its not faulty...

I checked the current by putting ammeter in series with the car's circuits...nothing special...

That's alright then, sorry.. not everyone knows how to use a multimeter lol

When you say you pulled fuses.. did you cover both fuse boxes?

even tho you say the battery is new doesnt mean its not a faulty one
i needed a new battery after i killed my first one, but it only lasted just over a week before another new battery was needed
just something to think about ;)

havent installed anything lately? stereo? added a extra power wire?

yeah did get both of em. Also measured the ohmic value between terminals and got 5.4 ohms which is stupidly low. However when i pulled the fuses bounded by a yellow frame (i believe it is the audio fuse the ohmic value increased to 170 - much better. Yet battery still sucking over 3 amps. Im bloody stumped! Btw never goin to mistu they'll leach ya for all ya cash

Well you've obviously got a short somewhere, but it's curious that even when you pulled every fuse it didn't make a difference. The only way I can imagine that happening is if you've lost some insulation on one of the main +ve wires between the battery and the fuses. But that sounds unlikely.

Well like i said tomorrow im gonna check the voltage regulator and see what that shows. ill let you guys know what happens. i was hoping this was a problem someone else has had. Btw car is stock as a rock

the problem may be in the starter motor or solenoid

ask to have that checked out also

an insulation problem or the brushes inside the starter

I did have a problem like that on my old VT commodore - when the seats were replaced after it was detailed they'd put the runners back down over the electric seat adjustment wires and it gradually wore through the insulation and shorted against the seat frame lol

na not a starter motor or solenoid problem. I dont have them in circuit when measuring battery.

thats going to be a tough one for you

keep us posted

if it is in your car then it may present in others

does anyone know of a vehicle recall on this model re :electrical faults ?:doubt:

Yeah definately keep the posts. Im also worried that if i find the problem it could be costly to fix/getting parts. Knowing mistu and their cash hungry ways....

Hey guys found the problem. Downloaded those magna manuals from here (bloody helpful) and looked at the circuit diagrams. long story short its the alternater or more specifically the diodes. They zapping current from the battery, prolly been shorted. Gonna try and claim it of stat warranty, which funny enough im claiming the clutch off also! Sweeet!

Cheers for the ideas guys
