View Full Version : Design opinions for another production fg sub box.

I started construction on the left side sub box today and I thought since ill be tool moulding this as well people can have some say in the design. I want to integrate an amp rack into this one as a large flat surface. This means I can go all the way to the wheel arch which will blend into the boot better. Heres some pics, photoshoppers feel free to muck around with it. The last pic is my little mock up of what I think it should be like.... a valley style setup with the sub and amp facing each other, tell me what you think.

you wouldnt be able to do the same on the other side would you?
be good for the people who are running a seperate amp for each sub

but its also a good spot to put a cap

will you be making just the box too?

Bigs
09-03-2008, 02:19 PM
the amp rack will be like an extension to the enclosure, it will be one piece but prolly sealed from the sub or it will be to big. Im not doing an amp rack for the right side, but im sure two mono blocks will fit onto this one.

Eh i wouldn't stress about 2nd gen stuff we are all tightasses when it comes to spending money
:shifty:
I think it would look better sort of mimicking the other side, so it looks even, the amp rack well from those quick placements its hard to tell what its going to look like

the only suggestion i would have had would have been to remove the trims on that side, and fab up a bit of false floor, to incorporate more of the wheel arch recess into the box, not neccessarily the enclosure but with a false wall could really clean it up, so straight back from the rear of the steas to run back along the face of the box you are fab'ing.

cut the carpet, fit it flush, otherwise all the effort you go to and it still looks like a autobahn velcro in special. Ive only done one install like this before, and i respect the amount of work that goes into it to make it, let alone styling it, but its obvious you have the ability to do it, and will make it look much more professional.

Just my 3bucks, other then that, i like your thinking, cant wait to see a finished product.

sweet. i cant wait for this.i was gonna make my own sub box, but instead i might take a left and right when your done.
ive also only got 1 amp. so that would be sweet.

you've got till the end of march. lol.
thats when i get back from my trip.

I don't really know much about the pro's & con's (do's & don'ts) around subs & amps.
...but when I was looking at subs & amps for the wagon, I read somewhere (or was told?) the following - just not sure how accurate it is.

From memory this had something to do with heat transfer/removal.
- Amps should be mounted horizontally/flat.
- Avoid mounting an amp vertically.
- Never mount an amp upside down (ie on roof or boot lid).

From memory, this had something to do with heat or sound waves 'rattling' the amp. (or maybe electro interference - I don't know)...
- Avoid mounting an amp on the sub box.
- Avoid mounting an amp in front of (facing) a sub.

Now you can all discuss, agree or tell me what a load of rubbish that was - and I'll shrink away quietly. lol

From a purely electronic point of view, I would never mount my amps directly on a sub box. The circuit boards and soldering inside an amp (or on 99.99% of any PCB) is not designed to cope with that sort of vibration for long periods of time.
I have had to fix countless instruments etc that have faulty solder joints due to vibration, its kills them.
People say "oh its not a very good quality amp then"... garbage, they are all soldered in pretty much the same way, the quality of the amp isn't going to be in the soldering, but in the actual amplification design and specs.

So no... I would not recommend screwing an amp directly to a sub box.

Mr İharisma
12-03-2008, 06:04 PM
I have my Audison amps mounted on the box, no problems ( 18months ). Although the rear of my box is 36mm MDF :bowrofl:

You can mount an amp anyway, you just have to make sure it has adequate ventilation. Usually due to amp design, upside down does not help the situation. IF you have enough bass the whole car rattles and no matter where you mount the amp, it is going to rattle. Thats why its a good idea to secure them down!

Bigs
13-03-2008, 05:17 PM
That's something I definitely overlooked. How about a sheet of 6mm foam under the carpet to counter the vibrations? The amp section will be sealed from the sub enclosure, so its not getting the full grunt from the sub anyway.

Lucifer
13-03-2008, 05:33 PM
Myths myths myths... Mount amp however you want it, if it's getting too hot, turn your gain down or buy an amp that can handle the power output

My amps are under 12.5mm polycarbonate... wtf is ventilation

OT though... I like the idea of building an amp rack into the sub box like that, would look very shmicko... and would greatly assist all the kiddies with factory stackers.

Thanks for the comment Lucifer. Im going to go ahead with the amp rack. Who thinks the foam layer is a waste of time?

Im going to finish the box this weekend, ill mould it by the following weekend, so by 3 weeks tops they should be for sale. Ill post photos of construction as I go in here for those interested.

Foam layer=waste of time...

Bigs

perhaps a double carpet layer where amp mounts is enough? Or would this be a waste too?

Poita

Its only the very very low frequency shocks which have to be absorbed, they are the ones that do the damage.

Another idea which I would be very interested in is purely an amp rack for 2-3 amps... whether it went on the rear of the back seat around the ski port or in the LH back corner of the boot...

...Another idea which I would be very interested in is purely an amp rack for 2-3 amps... whether it went on the rear of the back seat around the ski port or in the LH back corner of the boot...I'd vote for that. Good idea.

Then you have 3 items for sale which you can sell individually or package deal them together.
1. Right side sub enclosure - nicely fitted to side wall.
2. Left side sub enclosure - nicely fitted to side wall - and mirroring the Right side one in nice symmetry (looks and sound).
3. Custom AMP rack for (1-4 amps or a couple of amps and a tool box, fire extinguisher, etc.?)
I'm thinking of a set of shelves fitted to the size/shape of the Magna boot's rear - fitted around the ski port. maybe basic -maybe curvy, whatever. ???
Piota, is that what you were meaning?

That way you may pick up a sale for just the amp rack if people already have sub enclosures or subs that require bigger boxes, etc.
Would look very nice in the boot too. :D
Also, no complaints (valid or not) of the amp being attached to the sub box.

Yeah, thats a good idea. I cut out the ring etc and did a mockup mount in the car and the boot arms will smash into the mounted amp and there is no way around it. I think that ski port amp rack is a good idea, nice and simple and quite easy to mould. It would have no backing so you can run wires through. So im just going to try to mirror the other side now.

Bigs
13-04-2008, 08:41 PM
Yes a cover so to speak that snug fits into the ski port. Will have no backing and an mdf face behind the carpet so amps/tools/carputers/caps etc can be mounted inside and out with easy self tapping with the mdf. It will have a fg perimeter. Should be pretty cheap with only a single stage mould needed and cheap mdf taking up most of it. Prolly give it away for people buying both sides.

No I use a super glue with an accelerator, glues anything to anything(fingers included) in 1 second. Its called cyanoacrylate glue, you can get it at a hobby/model shop. CA glue for short.

theres two boxes, 1 for each side. and they are made to fit 12" subs.

i think that answers your question

Bigs
18-10-2008, 03:14 PM
correct. Because they come from a negative I cant modify the shape or size at all. They could be adapted to fit a 10" with a spacer, but you will have to do the modifications.
