View Full Version : Lowering my TJ

Hi everyone,

I got a 01 TJ, got some 17s chromes for it a while ago, but that damn gap,(between the wheel & the guard) makes the car look like a damn bus.

Just a quick question: In my opinion its looks alright at the back as it is, so how much can I lower the front without touching the back. I don’t care as much about handling, for me it’s all about looks. Has anyone done that? Is it safe? Does it look stupid?

I really don’t want to lower the back because I got 2 double barrel cannons on both sides of the rear bar & scrape them heaps as it is (basically at any steep drive way) , any lower & I will leave them behind at any large speed hump. :)

Get your cannons mounted up higher behind your rear bar/lose them and get king lows front and back.

King superlows on front... Load the back up with as much MDF for sound gear as you can to weigh it down so you don't have to lower the rear ;)

hahahahah you are not far off, i got a sub/amp at the back with LPG tank so the car does look lowered at the back already, which unfortunately makes front look even worse!!!!

Im going to say Lovel Superlows all round. Thats what I run, and I still think the gap is to much between the wheel and the guard.

Ride quality is almost as good as factory when running on 16s and 17s. Im running on 20s, and on a smooth road, the ride is amazing, almost stock. Its just when the road gets bumpy does it become an issue. But on 17s, it will be fine.

Lows wont do enough for you, there not much lower than the stock sports/vrx suspension. If your going to lower, do it once the right way :).

I have Lovells Superlows all round with stock shocks. It's quite low and need to be very careful when parking and going up driveways etc... Apart from that, it looks tuff.

Thanks for all the input guys. So how much lower do lovel superlow make it about 2 inches? & the ride quality is acceptable? Also is there any reasonable difference in ride quality between Lovel, King or Aurora?

I thinks it's about 2 inches, i'll check the box they came in tonight....

The ride quality, don;t know coz I have standard shocks with are 100k old but will be changed soon.

Depends if you go for Kings or Lovells. The consensus seems to be that the Lovell Superlows will lower a base model about 50mm, and the King Lows will lower about 45mm. I've got a VR-X and the difference between the King Lows and stock is night and day.

I went for Kings (which are stiffer than the Lovells) as well as KYB shocks and they ride quite well. It's noticably firmer than stock, but it's not stiff. I think you notice more imperfections in the road, but when you hit bumps, it's actually cushier than stock. I don't like cars that ride harsh, but I prefer my car's ride overall lowered compared to stock

Your car will look stupid if you have the front dumped on its guts and the back stock-ish. The boot install and LPG box might weight it down a bit, but it won't be enough. I'm with piv - mount the cannons higher or get rid of them (did someone say quad tips? :)).

i'm running king lows all round.. the rears i've cut one of the top coils (the bound 'dead' coils) just to sit her down just that wee bit more (went down about 16mm more).. with brand new KYB's and progressive bump stops.. all up it cost me about $700 for the parts.. and about 2 hrs working alone in the garage with some air tools to doo all corners.. then pop the back up and take one coil off straight away :) and i threw on the 20's... i think it sits pretty good as far as looks go :)

and the ride quality is awsome really.. it sticks.. but isn't harsh or bouncey.. it's pretty mint actaully.. like the car came factory like that..

I really dont want to get rid my canons (DRIFT) considering each is worth $330 supply only so x that by 2. I guess the only option would be cut my rear bar and mount them as high as i can. Problem with that is that there is not much room on left hand side (where there was no muffler originally), ill take it past Midas to see what the can do. Ill post a photo shortly.

My take on Super-Lows? For looks only. But if looks are what you're after then go for it.

I'll be getting some low's soon, but only on the basis that the spring rate is progressive.

I live in the sticks so roadholding is vitally important.

Perhaps i need to repeat myself, i already catch every fu**in large speed hump as it is, thus lowering will make it worse even with cut bumper. Oh yes & thank you for your opinion I WILL DEFINITELY TAKE THEM OF NOW.

That was sarcasm by the way.

oh sarcastic fair enough, i was being dead serious. dunno why you would think about lowering if you scrape already. seems like a pretty dumb idea to me

Lowering the front without lowering the back will look stupid.
Not to mention handle crap.

Your next best thing is to grab some vr-x/ralliart springs (15mm drop) and then get some flares that overhang the guard (rallliart flares are good for this) and will make the car look lower. Otherwise raising the mufflers is going to be your only way.

simple way of doing this take the rice burners off the back put a lukey/magnaflow/something on it that actually gives clearance then slam it on SL.

If you really want to keep the cannons, I don't see what's wrong with recessing them into the bumper. ARS55 did it (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55830) and it turned out really neat. His car is also pretty low, but the back end (including exhaust) doesn't look any lower than mine, and I've never scraped the bumper - the worst I've done is touch my exhaust against my driveway one day when I wasn't thinking properly.

Thanks for all the input guys really appreciate it. I will definitely not lower the front without the back, as few people have mentioned that handling will suffer. So if I’m lowering my car by 2ihcn (lovels SL am I right?) all around, so logically will need to raise my cannons approx 2 inches, is that correct?

If you're dead set on keeping them, it looks like you have about an inch of clearance to your bar, and then if you cut 2 inches out you could raise them close to 3 inches. You could probably put them pretty close to the plastic because exhaust gases distributed through 4 cannons will barely make the tips warm.
