I've just this arvo found a Sigma front cut sitting in a wreckers. It's a 3L V6 and the guy said it's been there for about 4 years. He also reckons it's in good nick as it's only done 85,000kms. Thinking of having some discussions on prices, any ideas on what I should be looking at for prices?

Which wreckers is it in - if it's local (to us) and the wreckers I'm thinking about then they may know it's worth - the deal in a lot of import bits.
You say 3L V6 - but SOHC or DOHC ?
If it's the one I'm thinking of, it was only a SOHC and the front Diamante grille was cracked.
I got my leather centre console lid from it.

I'm pretty sure that'd be the one (Sebastopol Wreckers), the only reason I knew it was a Signa was 'cos of the front end. He knows it's an import but I'm not sure how much else he knows about it because when he was talking he didn't say 'that Sigma' he said 'that Magna import'.
No idea about the SOHC or DOHC, I'm not that mechanically minded. It's an auto and I'd prefer a manual, but then again how often does something like this come along. Gonna have one of my mate's have a look at it with me on Monday 'cos he knows much more than I do.
Any other comments/questions?

you'll know it's a DOHC when the silver manifold says "DOHC" and the rocker covers are square and black with "mitsubishi" written on them. :)
good luck. dont buy if it's a SOHC obviously.

Fair call, didn't really have the sort of clothing I needed to be crawling into the engine bay as it was a little difficult to get into (plus I was just surprised to actually see a Sigma lol)
EDIT: Yeah, 100 posts!!!! lol

Nah it's all good, I'll make sure I'm capable of getting real dirty, I was only in their to grab a loom for my radio anyway.
Are there parts that are likely to deteriorate 'cos it's been out in the open for so long? Is it likely that someone may have already grabbed something from this front cut? In other words, I'm still pretty new to wreckers and although I'll have a mate with me who knows a bit I'd still like to be armed with as much info and help as possible.
So... any hints?

Yeah that's the wreckers. Damn, I now I won't be near them until Monday to go take a look.
If it's the same one I got my console lid from, it's a SOHC. But it could be a different one.
They're good blokes (usually).
I've picked up some good stuff from them at reasonable prices like some of my Verada stuff for the old wagon.
But twice they have disappointed me...
I once asked how much for a single Verada Para headlight (the other was cracked).
They said $250 (for one!). I said no thanks.
About 1-2 months later, I dropped by and saw they had moved the car, smashing the para headlight in the process!
The other time, they got a Verada Wagon in. I asked how much for some of the interior bits. (This was early days, before I'd done much to the interior)
They said no, the interior was not being parted out. They would only sell the interior as a whole which was too much for me.
About 1-2 months later, I dropped in and saw that the car was still there with most of the interior intact, but with bits that I wanted, like the interior lights & clock, gone - sold individually.

Does feel good to get that out... lol
Yeah, when I picked up the loom today he was on the phone when he told me '$10 for that mate' and I looked in my wallet and found no notes and he must've seen it 'cos he said, 'you got $5. Definitely wanted to rip me off. They do seem a bit dodgy, not really knwing what's goin' on. Was the front cut closer to the front sheds on the left of the path as you walk out? That's where this one was anyway. It's probably the same on if it's been there 4 years.

You'd hope so, but if it's only done 85,000kms it should still be in good nick, plus he knows it's an import.
Even if it does turn out to be a SOHC it'd still be a big improvement on my 2.6L 4cyl. If I can get a decent price Imay go with it anyway.

Take a couple of photos tomorrow, post them up and i'll let you know how much you should start as an offer.
Seeing as it's been there for 4 years, pricing will be on your side.
Here are the two different engines. If it's a SOHC don't bother with it just take the exterior bits like the front bar, lip, etc.
But if it's the DOHC go for it. It's the same engine from a non turbo GTO/3000GT engine.

pretty sure that it's just SOHC but I'm hoping I'm wrong, 'cos I would lovea V6.SOHC is a V6, it's just the more "standard" one that everyone here has. The DOHC is a lot rarer over here, and gives a fair bit more power.
But if you were looking at doing a conversion from 4cyl to V6, I'm guessing people would say you may as well try to go for the DOHC and be done with it. That said, would probably prove cheaper and a hell of a lot less hassle to just sell your car and buy a V6 version. Sad but true.

Hmm... If he's doing the V6 DOHC swap, the only additional expense will be the V6 gearbox and related stuff and an engine mount point. Which isn't very much at all.

Went in to the wreckers today with my camera to find when I got there that my camera battery had run out...... but maybe next time. It's only an SOHC engine and the guy that i needed to talk to about the price wasn't there so still in the dark on that one. However, it has EVERYTHING I need so it's just a straight swap.
Was talking to Lucifer last night on MSN and he suggested that to convert will possibly cost around $10,000. I was a bit shocked at that much. Can anyone else confirm that? If I can get it for a cheap price I'll probably get it and hang onto it until my 4cyl blows up and then convert. Would be nice to get another 50,000kms out of this one and then perhaps another 200,000kms out of another, plus the longer I have this car, the more mods I can do .
The crack in the Diamante grille was at the bottom of the 'T' in the centre and is sort of like a circle crack (I bet that didn't make sense but you'll get it once I post pics. Let me know if you think you'd like this, may even post and EOI in For Sale section so keep yours eyes peeled
Any Q's?.

Charge your camera and take photos tomorrow. Yes a conversion will set you back a lot of money. To change it to a SOHC i don't think $10000. More likely around $7000. It really depends if you do it yourself or have a workshop do it for you. But at the end of the day, it's simply not worth it (like i've said over a hundred times before). So you might as well buy a V6 or convert it to DOHC 3000GT/GTO engine

Mean Magna,
Don't do it - it's not worth it.
You'd be better off buying a V6 Auto Verada or find a V6 Manual and sell yours.
If your dead-set on doing a V6 conversion to your car, then do the DOHC swap like dimi108 & TUFFTR. Even then, I'd start with a V6 Magna/Verada (with a dead V6 in it). The conversion will be simpler, cheaper and easier to get past the VicRoads guys.
If, you've got $7000-$10000 to blow on your car then I'd be seriously thinking of another car, wild turbo upgrade on a rebuilt 2.6ltr or doing a DOHC twin turbo (out of a GTO/3000GT).

Fair call, went in to see the guy again today for price and also to get pics (which will be up sometime after 6) and he said I could have the whole front cut for $1,750, engine for $1,000 and gearbox for $500. The first price the guy actually mentioned was $2,500 and I said 'not a chance'. He replied with 'rightio, let's go have a lookat it', and then he lowered the price, can't believe he was gonna try and get another $750 out of me.
Any thoughts on this sort of price, probably not gonna buy it but I haven't had any experience with front cuts before so any advice is much appreciated.

That's way too overpriced. Good to see some pics at last though.
Pick some stuff from it if you want but that's the bottom budget F07W base model Sigma Kombi there.
It's been sitting there for 4 years dude. Plus he can see you're keen because you keep coming back taking pictures and probably gawking over it and asking him more about Sigma's etc. AND he's seen your car too so he knows you want to upgrade stuff.
Just tell him you've found another Sigma front cut at [insert other wrecker's name here] and it's up for grabs for only $500. If he says no way not matching that price or lower then see ya later.
That whole car is no better than an auction grade 2. Which is pretty much junk grade.

Maybe if he'd bothered to wipe that inch thick layer of dust off it, he could have read the "Mitsubishi V6" on the rocker cover.
Apart from the front grille and headlight assembly, which looks stuffed anyway, it doesn't look any better than a standard ADM Magna/Verada V6. I've seen entire V6 Magna's in great condition go for $1200-1500, way too overpriced.
Best of luck with it though, and may I add nice wagon you have there. :)

Thanks mate, got some more mods to come soon too, both of which getting done the weekend after Easter. Gonna get the old girl lowered a tad partially 'cos it needs it but also because you can rock her from side to side pretty easy. Lets clear up a few things here.
Yes you would be insane for paying any more than about 100 bucks for this given it has been sitting outside for 4 years, it is no better than a mid class magna and has no benefit to you other than poss a motor that is mist likely had it (would need all new gaskets, belts seals etc)
As for 10 grand for a conversion to V6, If any one wants me to do this for 7 - 10 K, please, I need the $$ then again I could not rip you off blind.
If you do not mind changing your parts to a V6 magna or rada, you are better off but if your car is special to you, you get a doner car cheap, could not see 4 grand for a standard conversion even at a stretch.
